Higher education internationalisation is more than mobility \u2013 if universities are to become truly \u2018international\u2019, they have to start \u2018at home\u2019. This is the motto of Developing Innovative Approaches and Tools for Internationalisation at Home<\/a> (ATIAH), an Erasmus+ project between three European universities: Newcastle University (Coordinating institution), University of Bologna (Italy) and KU Leuven (Belgium).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0prime aim of this project\u00a0is\u00a0to contribute to the relevance and quality of European higher education (HE) by developing tools for HE institutions wishing to review and improve Internationalisation at Home\u00a0practices. To this end, in the first phase of the project the ATIAH team collected data on the perceptions of staff and students about internationalisation practices at their HE institutions.<\/p>\n

In this research seminar, we will share the key quantitative findings of an online survey sent to students and staff across the partner institutions, as well as other European HE institutions. We will explore the viewpoints of 342 students and staff on internationalisation at home, namely: (a) opportunities for intercultural development, (b) extent of interaction between international and home students, (c) key activities of Internationalisation at Home, and (d) support services.<\/p>\n

We will discuss how the key findings from the survey have been used to inform the design of the project outputs. The outputs or resources are intended to support HE institutions to determine how Internationalisation at home is (or could be) enacted and evidenced in internationalisation policies, processes and practices.<\/p>\n

Joana Almeida\u00a0 and Sue Robson are both members of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences.<\/p>\n
