{"id":4058,"date":"2018-05-01T10:32:55","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T09:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=4058"},"modified":"2018-05-01T17:09:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-01T16:09:59","slug":"student-research-success-at-the-british-conference-of-undergraduate-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2018\/05\/01\/student-research-success-at-the-british-conference-of-undergraduate-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Student research success at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirteen Newcastle University undergraduate students brilliantly represented all three faculties and their own research at this year&#8217;s British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR).<\/p>\n<p>This annual event is going from strength to strength with over 250 presentations and 180 posters over two days at this year&#8217;s host institution, the University of Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>Recognising that this was\u00a0a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and develop key employability skills, Professor Suzanne Cholerton (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching) sponsored eleven students to attend.\u00a0 An extra two students successfully applied for funding from their Schools, so Newcastle was very well represented.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4059\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4059 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Delegation of staff and students at the BCUR\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/05\/BCUR-delegation.jpg 1199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delegation of staff and students at the BCUR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Student submissions were carefully considered by a panel at Newcastle University who picked the students who successfully presented their research in a way that non-experts could engage with.\u00a0That was just the first step as students then went on to submit their abstracts directly to the conference; they were then reviewed by the conference committee. All Newcastle University submissions were accepted with no revisions.<\/p>\n<p>Students were invited to present in a wide variety of formats including oral presentations, poster presentations, installations, demonstrations and performances.\u00a0 A performance from Warwick University aimed at\u00a0exploring\u00a0<em>To What Extent Can an\u00a0All-Female Punk Band, from\u00a0Warwick University in 2017, Be\u00a0Authentic?<\/em> definitely got people talking!<\/p>\n<p>Our students\u2019 presentations reflected the multi-disciplinary nature of the conference, ranging from\u00a0<em>The Politics of Happiness: An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Political Participation and Wellbeing<\/em>\u00a0to<em>\u00a0Are Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Still Found in Treated Wastewater? Evaluation of the Local Domestic Wastewater of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. <\/em>You can take a look at the full conference programme on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/bcur18\/programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, and you can see all the Newcastle contributors <a href=\"http:\/\/q.wke.lt\/w\/s\/3tSrv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. Damien sits on the National Steering Group for the BCUR; he is committed to seeing this conference and its sister event, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcur.org\/about\/posters-in-parliment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Posters in Parliament<\/a>, grow over the coming years. He said:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was delighted with our students\u2019 response to the competition from all corners of the University\u2014we got many more submissions than we had thought we would! We had a great time at the conference, too. We made valuable contacts, and, most importantly, we did it in a fun way.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Damien would love to hear from any students interested in presenting at either of next year\u2019s two BCUR events: Posters in Parliament, in Westminster in February 2019, or the main <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcur.org\/bcur-19-host-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference<\/a>, at the University of South Wales in the Easter holidays 2019.
