{"id":4094,"date":"2018-05-22T09:31:08","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T08:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=4094"},"modified":"2018-05-22T09:31:29","modified_gmt":"2018-05-22T08:31:29","slug":"windows-10-update-in-teaching-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2018\/05\/22\/windows-10-update-in-teaching-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10 update in teaching spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Update from Gary Atkinson, Infrastructure Systems Manager, NUIT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Desktops located in teaching clusters, flat floor teaching, lecture theatres and meeting rooms will start to move to Windows 10 over the summer period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are we upgrading?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Windows 7 has been our preferred desktop operating system for the last 9 years and will fall out of support in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to Windows 10 will allow us to present a modern up to date desktop which our current and prospective students have come to expect and may already be using on their personal devices.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to Windows 10 will allow us to improve our customer experience:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Removal of roaming profiles<\/li>\n<li>Easier access to file shares when working remotely<\/li>\n<li>Faster logon times<\/li>\n<li>Updated version of Microsoft Office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When\u2019s this happening?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Faculties and PS are planning and timelining rollouts for their supported locations.\u00a0 Cluster rooms and flat floor teaching will start to move over the 2018 summer break.\u00a0 As staff desktops and laptops become end of life and are replaced they will be Windows 10 as part of a creeping rollout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do I need to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Familiarise yourself with Windows 10.\u00a0 There is a brief introduction to Windows 10 document located at the link below which may help.<\/p>\n<p>While Windows 10 may look a little different the underlying way of working remains the same.\u00a0 Your login and password will remain the same.<\/p>\n<p>If you use the Microsoft Office Suite at work, you will notice this has now been upgraded to Office 2016 as part of the move.\u00a0 Again, it may look a little different, but the underlying way of working remains the same and files created in previous version of the Microsoft Office Suite are compatible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where can I find out more? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further information, timelines and FAQs can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/projects\/windows10\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Windows 10 Rollout<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss this with your local IT support staff prior to the upgrade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update from Gary Atkinson, Infrastructure Systems Manager, NUIT Desktops located in teaching clusters, flat floor teaching, lecture theatres and meeting rooms will start to move to Windows 10 over the summer period.
