{"id":4643,"date":"2018-12-17T09:35:29","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T09:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=4643"},"modified":"2019-01-10T17:07:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T17:07:23","slug":"accessibility-stocking-fillers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2018\/12\/17\/accessibility-stocking-fillers\/","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility Stocking Fillers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to find out how to make your content accessible for everyone?<\/p>\n<p>In our latest 3Ps we covered a range of accessibility tools and tips to ensure that we can quickly and easily make new and existing materials accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>In the session we covered three topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to use styles, colours, alt text to create accessible content.<\/li>\n<li>Tools available to students and staff so make content accessible and support the<\/li>\n<li>Some of the frustrations staff and students might experience and how to overcome them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you weren\u2019t able to attend the session you can have a go and test your accessibility knowledge with the <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/:f:\/s\/3PsAccessibility\/Eg-ouRg7k_1PsrZHiY9d27wBCxT6P3XrOsnLCwspwjkgLg?e=8Y4yRF\">Accessibility Checking Activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<h3>Microsoft Office<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/office-accessibility-center-resources-for-people-with-disabilities-ecab0fcf-d143-4fe8-a2ff-6cd596bddc6d?ui=en-US&amp;rs=en-GB&amp;ad=GB\">Microsoft Office Accessibility Center<\/a> is a great place to look for handy guides on producing accessible Office documents with out of the box accessible templates. Microsoft Office is available for free to all staff and students and has some great <a href=\"https:\/\/sway.office.com\/vAdiAMXOJEQGVbqX\">Microsoft Accessibility Features<\/a> built in.<\/p>\n<h3>Adobe Acrobat PDFs<\/h3>\n<p>Staff and Students have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro from University Machines. Acrobat has a built in <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/uk\/acrobat\/using\/create-verify-pdf-accessibility.html\">PDF Accessibility Checker<\/a> which can automatically fix issues with your PDFs and also advise you on why certain elements aren\u2019t accessible.<\/p>\n<h3>Video Captions<\/h3>\n<p>The session focused mainly of text and images but if you\u2019d like to find out more about creating accessible audio and video content you check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2016\/11\/29\/video-transcripts\/\">blog post on creating captions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>On Campus<\/h3>\n<p>For disabled users accessing IT services on campus we offer specialist software and hardware available to staff and students via our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/itservice\/accessibility-advice\/\">Easy Access Accessibility Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Printable Checklists<\/h3>\n<p>Download and print copies of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ltds\/assets\/documents\/accessibility-checklists.pdf\">A4 checklists for Word, Powerpoint, PDFs and Blackboard<\/a> and keep them with you for quick reference.<\/p>\n<h2>What support is available?<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wellbeing\/\">Student Health and Wellbeing Service<\/a> provides information, advice and guidance on a wide range of student support issues, helping students to maximise their potential whilst at university.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any queries about creating accessible content get in touch with us and we\u2019ll be happy to offer advice and guidance \u2013 contact <a href=\"mailto:LTDS@ncl.ac.uk\">LTDS@ncl.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to find out how to make your content accessible for everyone?
