{"id":4888,"date":"2019-05-07T09:04:35","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T08:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2019-05-07T09:04:35","modified_gmt":"2019-05-07T08:04:35","slug":"lilac-award-terry-charlton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2019\/05\/07\/lilac-award-terry-charlton\/","title":{"rendered":"LILAC award: Terry Charlton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Terry Charlton who won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilacconference.com\/about-lilac\">LILAC\u00a0<\/a> Digital Award for Information Literacy 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Terry won the award for his fantastic work\u00a0 in the University Library Liaison team developing Newcastle University Library&#8217;s Online Learning Resources.<\/p>\n<h4>What did the project involve?<\/h4>\n<p>The project started with in depth consultation with students. This highlighted a preference for rich media and short,\u00a0 focused videos that could be viewed on a range of devices when students needed them.<\/p>\n<p>After listening to student views\u00a0a number of videos were produced to cover information literacy skills areas such as literature reviews, finding information and evaluating information. Attention\u00a0 was paid to the style of\u00a0 these videos which included background illustrations and animations. Other team members were the friendly face of the videos, which involved a bit of green screen acting. Take a look at one of the videos below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ASK Online Learning Resources 1.1: Finding Information - Knowing where to look\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A3VqZ1V7j5Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second phase of the project included the development of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.ncl.ac.uk\/dissertations\/search_planner\">search planner tool<\/a> which is a step by step approach to planning a literature search. This results in a personalised search strategy and can be shared with others, for example supervisors or the library liaison team.<\/p>\n<h4>Project successes<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Over 9000 views of the videos in the first 6 months<\/li>\n<li>94% of survey respondents rated the videos as &#8216;very good&#8217; or &#8216;outstanding&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Greater student understanding of information literacy issues<\/li>\n<li>Using a flipped classroom approach enabled lectures to focus on areas where students demonstrate less understanding<\/li>\n<li>A fivefold increase in visits to dissertation pages<\/li>\n<li>The resources are accessible, responsive, device independent and mobile friendly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Find out more<\/h4>\n<p>Terry has recently moved to work in the Learning and Teaching Development Service and if you want to find out more you can contact him at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:terry.charlton@ncl.ac.uk\">terry.charlton@ncl.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Terry Charlton who won a LILAC\u00a0 Digital Award for Information Literacy 2019.
