{"id":5647,"date":"2020-06-11T16:49:52","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T15:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=5647"},"modified":"2021-09-17T15:29:22","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T14:29:22","slug":"flexible-learning-2020-online-course-and-website-now-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2020\/06\/11\/flexible-learning-2020-online-course-and-website-now-available\/","title":{"rendered":"Flexible Learning 2020: Online Course and Website now available"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are you&nbsp;starting to plan your&nbsp;teaching for next year?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncl.instructure.com\/courses\/28542\">Flexible Learning\u00a02020\u00a0online\u00a0course<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/services.ncl.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/flex\/\">website<\/a>\u00a0are comprehensive resources\u00a0developed by LTDS, FMS TEL\u00a0and NUIT, and\u00a0are\u00a0available now.\u00a0They provide\u00a0achievable\u00a0ideas\u00a0for alternative\u00a0activities\u00a0as we move to a\u00a0flexible\u00a0education\u00a0offer in 20\/21.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student learning\u00a0experience\u00a0\u00a0in\u00a020\/21 will involve a mixture of online and\u00a0on-campus learning\u00a0and assessment\u00a0activities.\u00a0Flexible Learning 2020\u00a0articulates the delivery of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/sites\/LTDS\/DigitalLearningSite\/StaffOnly\/Educational_Resilience_Framework_final.pdf?cid=cbc92097-eede-4b08-8514-cafeab613e40&amp;CT=1591888677673&amp;OR=OWA-NT&amp;CID=080578d0-0533-3d90-2265-d96f70c98891\">Education Resilience Framework,<\/a>\u00a0an institutional framework for the revision and development of our taught modules and programmes for 20-21,\u00a0due\u00a0to the continuing Covid-19 situation.\u00a0Flexible Learning 2020 supports the design and development of\u00a0teaching flexibly\u00a0to deliver engaging student learning\u00a0activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;Course&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideas and expertise from across\u00a0\u00a0the University are brought together in this\u00a0self paced\u00a0online course<a href=\"https:\/\/ncl.instructure.com\/courses\/28542\">\u00a0available in Canvas<\/a>.\u00a0Complete the full course or\u00a0do the\u00a0<em>Before the course starts<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Building an education community<\/em>\u00a0 sections, then\u00a0dip into\u00a0the\u00a0sections\u00a0most useful for you and your students.\u00a012\u00a0key areas are\u00a0covered including:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Rethinking lectures<\/strong>:&nbsp;Make&nbsp;use of&nbsp;recordings, readings, commentary&nbsp;and discussion boards.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Building a learning community<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;Build social and peer group connections from the start.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Involving guest speaker<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;Make use&nbsp;of&nbsp;Zoom and Teams.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Seminars and sma<\/strong><strong>l<\/strong><strong>l group teaching<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;Before, during and after. How to&nbsp;incorporate&nbsp;non-synchronous&nbsp;activities&nbsp;to get the most out of&nbsp;synchronous delivery.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Online assess<\/strong><strong>ment:<\/strong>&nbsp;How&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;different assessment types can work online.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Labs<\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp;considerations for acceptable online lab resources\/simulations to provide introduction\/discussion points when students may not be able to take part in in-person on campus labs.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Studio\/<\/strong><strong>practice based<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;activities<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>for supporting students on programmes in the creative disciplines or where making and producing are a significant part of the programme&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also find ideas&nbsp;for&nbsp;field trips, project supervision and group work&nbsp;projects&nbsp;and&nbsp;more.&nbsp;The time it will take to complete each section is clearly indicated so you can complete the&nbsp;sections&nbsp;relevant to&nbsp;your teaching&nbsp;whenever it is convenient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating in the course will help you think about your practice\u00a0through\u00a0a mix of\u00a0practical\u00a0Canvas based\u00a0activities,\u00a0examples from across the University,\u00a0discussion points and\u00a0useful\u00a0\u00a0tips.\u00a0Everyone will\u00a0be automatically enrolled \u2013 just look for Flexible Learning 2020 on your dashboard\u00a0when you <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ncl.ac.uk\/login\/\">log in to Canvas.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The&nbsp;Website&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/services.ncl.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/flex\/\">Flexible Learning 2020 website<\/a> includes examples, resources, guides and screencasts to help deliver the alternative activities\u00a0you choose.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also find&nbsp;out more about&nbsp;the context&nbsp;of Flexible Learning 2020, the&nbsp;key areas&nbsp;of alternative activities&nbsp;and working definitions&nbsp;used.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More content will be added\u00a0to both the course and website\u00a0over the coming weeks so keep checking back.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canvas&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canvas\u00a0is our exciting\u00a0new VLE, replacing Blackboard\u00a0from\u00a01 August\u00a02020,\u00a0and\u00a0provides\u00a0many\u00a0opportunities\u00a0to\u00a0deliver\u00a0an\u00a0enhanced online\u00a0learning\u00a0experience for students.
