{"id":5692,"date":"2020-08-17T17:20:12","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T16:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=5692"},"modified":"2020-08-19T12:05:58","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T11:05:58","slug":"national-recognition-for-newcastle-universitys-teaching-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2020\/08\/17\/national-recognition-for-newcastle-universitys-teaching-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"National recognition for Newcastle University\u2019s teaching excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the second year in a row, three Newcastle academics have been elected as National Teaching Fellows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awarded by\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advance-he.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Advance HE<\/strong><\/a>, the fellowships recognise\u202fexcellence in enhancing and transforming\u202fstudent outcomes and teaching.\u202fNewcastle University\u2019s\u202fDr\u202fClare&nbsp;Guilding,\u202fProfessor\u202fSimon Tate and\u202fDr\u202fIain Keenan are among this year\u2019s 56 new National Teaching Fellows.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u202f2017,\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/numed\/staff\/profile\/clareguilding.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dr Guilding<\/strong><\/a>\u202ftook up the position of Dean of Academic Affairs in\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/numed\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed)<\/strong><\/a>, leading the development and implementation of Newcastle\u2019s new MBBS curriculum there. She\u202falso\u202fplayed a key role in developing the British Pharmacological Society\u2019s (BPS) new undergraduate pharmacology curriculum, now used to develop pharmacology curricula nationally and internationally.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/C-Guilding-pic-3-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"Clare Guilding\" class=\"wp-image-5696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/C-Guilding-pic-3-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/C-Guilding-pic-3-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/C-Guilding-pic-3-768x530.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr&nbsp;Guilding\u202fsaid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u202f\u201cI am honoured to have been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship, which has been achieved through collaborations with wonderful colleagues within and\u202foutwith\u202fthe\u202fUniversity. I chose to work at Newcastle University because of its forward-thinking approach to education.\u202fI&#8217;m grateful for the support and encouragement in developing new initiatives from the academic and professional services teams in the School of Medical Education and at\u202fNUMed\u202fMalaysia.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cMy role at\u202fNUMed\u202fhas provided me the opportunity to work in an international capacity and engage more widely with the medical education and pharmacology communities worldwide. I am also thankful for the opportunities for engagement with the wider pharmacology community that have arisen through collaborations with the British Pharmacological Society and the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cI am delighted to join the NTF community and look forward to the ideas and projects that this will inspire.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/gps\/staff\/profile\/simontate.html#background\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Simon Tate<\/strong><\/a>\u202fis a\u202fProfessor of Pedagogy in Higher Education\u202fand Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT) at&nbsp;the\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/gps\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>School of Geography, Politics and Sociology<\/strong><\/a>.\u202fAs a former schoolteacher, he is interested in researching and improving the social and academic transition to university for undergraduate students. As a former geography teacher, I am passionate about improving the transition to university for all geography students, particularly those from a widening participation background. He was recognised for achieving\u202fhighly successful outcomes through constructing effective educational frameworks, developing student partnerships and through creative open-access communication of his innovative evidence-based learning approaches.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"652\" height=\"587\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/Iain-Keenan.png\" alt=\"Iain Keenan\" class=\"wp-image-5698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/Iain-Keenan.png 652w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2020\/08\/Iain-Keenan-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Keenan\u202fsaid: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI\u2019m delighted to have received a National Teaching Fellowship in recognition of my wide-ranging contributions to anatomical and medical education. It is an honour to be acknowledged for my work in creating successful student-partnerships, evidence-based learning frameworks and global open-access communication strategies.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019m very much looking forward to the many opportunities that my National Teaching Fellowship will provide. For example, I aim to develop effective learning approaches for supporting students in their understanding of challenging concepts through sharing my ideas and working with the wider NTF community. This will enable us to enhance the educational experience of not only individual learners, but also for wider student populations.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The three awards bring the total of NTFs awarded to Newcastle University educators to 18.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as this success, the University\u2019s achievements in learning and teaching have also been recognised recently with a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2020\/08\/17\/prestigious-teaching-award-for-university-team\/\">Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/executive\/board\/members\/suzannecholerton.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Professor Suzanne Cholerton<\/strong><\/a>, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Education&nbsp;said&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u202f\u201cIt\u2019s an extraordinary achievement by all \u2013 it\u2019s rare to have three successful NTFS nominations in one year, and even more so two in consecutive years, but to be recognised with\u202fCATE as well is exceptional and a ringing endorsement of my colleagues who\u2019ve been recognised, and Newcastle University\u2019s long tradition of excellence in teaching and supporting colleagues to develop and demonstrate their expertise in education.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Alison Johns, Advance HE CEO, said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI am sure I am joined by the entire sector in congratulating the 2020 NTFS and CATE awardees.&nbsp;All of&nbsp;the winners should be extremely proud of their achievement of what are prestigious, national teaching awards.
