{"id":6194,"date":"2021-05-06T14:21:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T13:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=6194"},"modified":"2021-05-05T14:44:26","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T13:44:26","slug":"reading-group-in-ltds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2021\/05\/06\/reading-group-in-ltds\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading group in LTDS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2021\/05\/kisspng-book-discussion-club-novel-women-library-reading-g-5d172d9e10d6d5.507388341561800094069.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2021\/05\/kisspng-book-discussion-club-novel-women-library-reading-g-5d172d9e10d6d5.507388341561800094069.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2021\/05\/kisspng-book-discussion-club-novel-women-library-reading-g-5d172d9e10d6d5.507388341561800094069-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A little while ago we started a small reading group for colleagues in the Learning and Teaching Development Service  to share ideas and discuss current issues and publications related to learning and teaching in Higher Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We set ourselves a couple of parameters to encourage engagement, as we had tried a journal club previously to not a great deal of success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time we decided to limit ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to things that could be read or digested in around less than half an hour<\/li><li>to try too keep the readings short and digestible<\/li><li>to keep the discussion sessions to 30 minutes <\/li><li>to use small groups for discussion of themes, impressions etc<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few groups we have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Discussed David White&#8217;s blog post on <a href=\"http:\/\/The need for Presence not \u2018Contact Hours\u2019\">The need for presence not contact hours<\/a><\/li><li>Looked at the OfS brief on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/news-blog-and-events\/press-and-media\/principles-based-regulation-ofs-publishes-new-insight-brief\/\">Principles Based Regulation<\/a><\/li><li>Listened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m000t4km\">Inventions in Sound<\/a>:\u00a0where the poet Raymond\u00a0Antrobus\u00a0explored the art of translating sound for the eye, looking at the poetic possibilities of closed captions.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our next group will explore microcredentials  by looking at the recent QAA quality compass paper &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qaa.ac.uk\/docs\/qaa\/news\/quality-compass-which-way-for-micro-credentials.pdf\">which way for micro credentials<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be the first meeting of a slightly expanded group which includes colleagues from FMS TEL .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have one person running the group for 6 months (Me!) and I look after collating suggestions which come in from anyone who wants to suggest something. I try to have a range of different types of materials and cover a range of learning and teaching related viewpoints as our group has people who work in policy, practice, pedagogy, quality assurance, data and governance, professional development and all the intersections thereof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time we listened to a radio programme about closed captions, which really made me think about how we approach captioning in HE.
