These are not project groups or reporting forums. Instead, they are spaces where colleagues can bring real challenges, test ideas, learn from one another and develop practical approaches that can be applied within their own contexts.

As curriculum transformation gathers pace, the Communities of Practice provide an opportunity to think together, share expertise and build on the considerable educational experience that exists across the University.

Four Focus Areas

The four Communities of Practice focus on the opportunities presented by the Leading Edge Curriculum, helping colleagues explore how we can create engaging, inclusive and transformative learning experiences for our students.

Led by the LEC Education Fellows, each community brings together colleagues with a shared interest in exploring new approaches, sharing experiences and creating practical outputs that can benefit the wider University community.

Assessment and Feedback Futures

Led by: Dr Sophie Hill, Dr Alison Graham and Dr Bethany Usher

Exploring approaches to assessment and feedback that support learning, develop feedback literacy and create meaningful opportunities for students to demonstrate achievement.

Pedagogical Approaches

Led by: Dr Christopher Leyland, Dr Amy Proctor and Dr Scott Walker

Exploring active, inclusive and research-informed approaches to teaching and learning that support student engagement and success.

Partnerships and Co-Creation

Led by: Linda Jose and Jonathan Ward

Exploring approaches that strengthen collaboration with students and external partners, helping to create authentic and engaging educational experiences.

Digital Education and AI

Led by: Dr David Grundy and Dr Matt Bawn

Exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and supporting colleagues to make informed decisions about their use in learning and teaching.

Taster Sessions

Following the introduction, colleagues joined one of four taster conversations led by the Community leads. These sessions provided an opportunity to explore emerging ideas, identify common challenges and begin shaping priorities for future activity.

Reflecting on the event, Emma McCulloch, Professional Services Lead for the LEC Fellows, said:

“It’s energising to see communities of practice taking root in the learning and teaching space, bringing so many people together to share, challenge and build on each other’s ideas. When we collaborate, we surface the depth of expertise across our community and amplify what works.”

Building a Community Beyond the Launch Event

The launch event was only the beginning. Each Community of Practice is now considering how members will connect and collaborate over the coming months, identifying priority themes, planning activities and exploring opportunities to develop shared resources, case studies and examples of effective practice.

To support ongoing discussion and collaboration, each Community of Practice has a dedicated Teams channel within the Newcastle Educators Team. These channels provide a space for colleagues to share ideas, ask questions, access resources and stay connected between events.

Assessment and Feedback

Teaching Approaches

Partnerships and Co-Creation

Digital Education and AI

Get Involved

There is still time to get involved.
