{"id":126,"date":"2012-07-04T16:44:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T15:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/lucillevalentine\/?p=126"},"modified":"2012-07-04T16:44:15","modified_gmt":"2012-07-04T15:44:15","slug":"feed-it-tame-it-and-milk-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/lucillevalentine\/2012\/07\/04\/feed-it-tame-it-and-milk-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Feed it, tame it and milk it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What does opportunity look like?\u00a0 Do you fetch it off a shelf or simply pet it when it lands on your shoulder?\u00a0 Feed it, tame it and milk it.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about limitations on women getting started in business, someone wise said \u2013 it\u2019s all in their heads \u2013 The inside out approach to being successful means that limitations are on the inside; you must feel the part before being the part? Is that fake it till you make it?<\/p>\n<p>None of the data in the Royal Society\u2019s 2010 report, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/royalsociety.org\/policy\/publications\/2010\/scientific-century\/\">The Scientific Century: securing our future prosperity<\/a>\u201d is separated by gender.\u00a0 Phew.\u00a0 They have digested data about UK university learners who then become researchers and where these people end up working.\u00a0 The graph on page 14 gives percentages that are relative to students starting. \u00a0I am interested in percentages relative to the number of early career researchers, or postdocs.\u00a0 Of postdocs: 8% stay on as full-time university staff (1% will become professors), 36% work in non-university science, 56% go on to work outside of science.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t (yet) have data for Newcastle and specifically for the Faculty of Medical Sciences.\u00a0 I am on the trail of it.\u00a0 But once I have it, what is the purpose of it?\u00a0 Is it simply to get people to sit up and take notice?<\/p>\n<p>There is that.\u00a0 In the principles of my nudge universe where full disclosure is needed, where people must be allowed to make a proper choice with all the information in from of them, the above numbers are stark.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers \u2013 and I include postdocs \u2013 do not simply fool themselves though.\u00a0 They are people who have that scientific curiosity and the delight that comes from talking to smart friends about curious problems and maybe coming up with a view of the world that nobody else has before then.\u00a0 Finding the fresh snow.<\/p>\n<p>All the most fun-driven entrepreneurs are motivated by that same thing.\u00a0 To change the world (and maybe make money doing so), to create something novel, to fill a need.\u00a0 To listen to someone who runs a start-up one can be absolutely certain that it is not the money per se that drives them, the money is a marker and brilliant; and fun is the driver.
