{"id":26,"date":"2012-05-03T16:38:21","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T15:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/lucillevalentine\/?p=26"},"modified":"2012-05-10T11:06:38","modified_gmt":"2012-05-10T10:06:38","slug":"day-4-entre-preneur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/lucillevalentine\/2012\/05\/03\/day-4-entre-preneur\/","title":{"rendered":"Entre-Preneur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>week 1:4<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Entre \u2013 between<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Preneur \u2013 one who takes<\/p>\n<p>Added together = one who moves things \/ ideas \/ money between.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jean-Baptiste Say\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Baptiste_Say\">Jean-Baptiste Say<\/a>, a French economist, is believed to have coined the word &#8220;entrepreneur&#8221; in the 19th century &#8211; he defined an entrepreneur as &#8220;one who undertakes an enterprise, especially a contractor, acting as intermediatory between capital and labour&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Is that like a special case of a problem solver?\u00a0 And the fast flowing flaming flowering high achieving driven entrepreneurs are people who want this change \u2013 \u00a0this adaptation \u2013 to happen quickly?<\/p>\n<p>In my new office (large and open plan on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> floor with a view over the city of Newcastle\u2019s hills, construction and I can see the bridges over the Tyne and the Sage too) there are twelve or so RA\u2019s in an open plan office.\u00a0 The printer is located near me.\u00a0 The staff were abandoning the empty printer paper wrappers on the small cupboard by the side of the floor standing printer.\u00a0 I put the wrappers inside the paper recycling bin.\u00a0 Next day more wrappers.\u00a0 Then I realised that the paper bin was on the opposite side of the printer to where the cupboard with the paper was.\u00a0 I moved the bin to be next to the cupboard.\u00a0 And now no more wrappers being abandoned.\u00a0 Fabulous.<\/p>\n<p>Met with Richy Hetherington, Postgraduate Skills Development Co-ordinator at Biomedicine.\u00a0 He works with 600 students at the MRes and PhD level and has a book full of both compulsory and optional skills for the Biomedicine students to take up.\u00a0 Understanding IP, Writing skills&#8230;. anything that they are thought to need in conjunction to their research.\u00a0 The Roberts Report indentified a lack of appreciation for this level of students among employers.\u00a0 Many of the skills offered in these short courses are mean to address this, getting students to develop confidence and a conscious appreciation of their own capability.<\/p>\n<p>{What kind of organisational structure works in the research teams?\u00a0 Is it very different to most companies?}<\/p>\n<p>e-portfolio is being used \/ piloted to get students to reflect on their experiences, trials and tribulations \u2013 this self awareness then leading to self confidence.\u00a0 Medical students have long been encouraged to reflect on their experiences to improve their practice and do so more naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Richy likes skills to be taught in context.\u00a0 An alternative context that has developed is the student organised PG Conference for which the students do everything from reviewing papers, inviting speakers, venues, funding \u2013 everything.\u00a0 This year the conference will start on 26 October.\u00a0 The student organisers are always easily employed.<\/p>\n<p>{I want to investigate making a contribution at the conference, if appropriate}<\/p>\n<p>6 or 7 teams of 4 to 5 students each take part in Biotechnology YES every year and always highly recommend this.\u00a0 It addresses the process of commercialisation fairly high up the food-chain i.e. student teams must make pitches and develop (mock) businesses in the bio arena.<\/p>\n<p>There is no direct recruitment at the events or after however \u2013 when students put this on their CV\u2019s, employers always want to talk about it.\u00a0 Employers know about the contest.<\/p>\n<p>{Is it possible to increase the number of teams who attend?}<\/p>\n<p>Placements \u2013 internships of 3 months \u2013 to be done any time during the MRes or PhD years have become mandatory (by some funders?).\u00a0 Finding and managing placements \u2013 which do not have to be in the field of study \u2013 are still being trialled.\u00a0 The aspect that they are trying to get right is \u2013 when should these fit in?\u00a0 Either just after the MRes and before PhD, or after submission of thesis and waiting for viva.<\/p>\n<p>{What if it were in the field of study? Would these people be suitable for placement at one of the many pharma or bio companies in the region?}<\/p>\n<p>Michael Whitaker worked on a very useful document \u2013 laying out, on one page, the entrepreneurial activity across the University.\u00a0 He grants that it may be a tiny bit out of date since he did it 18 months ago, but it captures <strong>the activitie<\/strong>s and <strong>the purpose<\/strong> for them and <strong>the outcomes<\/strong> very neatly.\u00a0 I have asked for a copy to include here.<\/p>\n<p>Michael expects me to run around meeting as many people as possible \u2013 network and be visible \u2013 for my first month and come up with ideas of things to do.\u00a0 To this end I have a few extra people to add to my list of people to meet.
