He was (and remains) interested in the end of the Roman Empire and the late Roman villa on the outskirts of his home town seemed an exciting site to study.<\/p>\n<p>Since Leonard Hayward&#8217;s excavations no archaeological work had been carried out on the villa. For a long time the villa\u00a0was being regularly ploughed and we were unsure what impact this was having on the buried remains.\u00a0It was also unclear whether Leonard Hayward had uncovered the whole of the building, or just one wing of a grander structure (like the villa excavated not far away at <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/somerset\/5171108.stm\" target=\"_blank\">Dinnington<\/a> by Winchester University).<\/p>\n<p>In 2009 James received permission from English Heritage and the\u00a0landowners\u00a0to <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp1.somerset.gov.uk\/HER\/details.asp?prn=26101\" target=\"_blank\">geophysically survey <\/a>the villa site. This survey was carried out in March with the assistance of Liz Caldwell and Nigel Harvey of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geoflo.co.uk\/4901.html\" target=\"_blank\">GeoFlo<\/a> and volunteers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssarg.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Somerset Archaeological Research Group<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yalhs.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yeovil Archaeological and Local History Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: center\">\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/files\/2013\/04\/Resistivity-survey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/files\/2013\/04\/Resistivity-survey-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/files\/2013\/04\/Resistivity-survey-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/files\/2013\/04\/Resistivity-survey-472x300.jpg 472w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/files\/2013\/04\/Resistivity-survey.jpg 823w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Resistivity survey of the Roman villa at Lufton (Caldwell 2009, Figs 6 &amp; 7) \u00a9 GeoFlo and the Lufton Project<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pastperfect.org.uk\/archaeology\/resistivity.html\" target=\"_blank\">resistivity survey <\/a>(which is good at detecting differences between dry features such as stone walls and damp features like ditches) showed that the villa building did survive.
