{"id":397,"date":"2013-08-08T09:48:44","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T08:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/?p=397"},"modified":"2013-08-08T09:48:44","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T08:48:44","slug":"next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/2013\/08\/08\/next-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Next Year&#8230;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve only just returned from Somerset but James is already beginning to think about next Summer.<\/p>\n<p>A few hundred meters south west of where we were digging this year lies a large arable field that until the 1970s contained the earthworks of a <a href=\"http:\/\/webapp1.somerset.gov.uk\/her\/details.asp?prn=54371\" target=\"_blank\">deserted medieval settlement that may have been called &#8216;Barrow&#8217;<\/a>. Unfortunately the earthworks were bulldozed and nothing of this little settlement is now visible,<\/p>\n<p>When the earthworks were destroyed local archaeologists collected a small quantity of medieval pottery. This include some 10-11 century AD sherds. \u00a0We hope to investigate this field with geophysics over the winter and perhaps carry out some excavation there next year.<\/p>\n<p>Investigating &#8216;Barrow&#8217; would tell us a lot about how well the archaeological remains of the settlement survive. It might also give us the opportunity to explore the earlier, pre-Norman, phases of activity. The origins of medieval settlements and their relationship with the preceding Roman landscape are <a href=\"http:\/\/humanities.exeter.ac.uk\/archaeology\/research\/projects\/title_84580_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">important issues<\/a> and Barrow may offer us an opportunity to address these questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve only just returned from Somerset but James is already beginning to think about next Summer.
