{"id":510,"date":"2014-07-17T18:57:12","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T17:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/?p=510"},"modified":"2014-07-19T20:27:12","modified_gmt":"2014-07-19T19:27:12","slug":"seal-matrix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/2014\/07\/17\/seal-matrix\/","title":{"rendered":"Seal Matrix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had an exciting find yesterday just south of Trench B.<\/p>\n<p>A copper-alloy seal matrix (used for marking sealing wax with a design) dating from AD1250-1400 depicting a hare riding a hound and blowing a horn. Around the edge there&#8217;s an inscription reading &#8216;Sohev Roben&#8217;, which is a medieval phrase similar to &#8216;Tallyho Fido&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The seal is a humorous little piece and mocks the medieval elite&#8217;s favourite past time. It may have belonged to a noblewoman poking fun at her male friends and relations or a clergyman.<\/p>\n<p>A similar seal is noted on the<a href=\"http:\/\/finds.org.uk\/database\/artefacts\/record\/id\/223790\" target=\"_blank\"> PAS Database<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Mike (Ski) for his help in finding this object.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96510663@N05\/14506571167\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2918\/14506571167_1e43b94bd1.jpg\" alt=\"seal\" width=\"500\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We had an exciting find yesterday just south of Trench B.
