When the boundaries of the trench had been marked out the top-soil and sub-soil was removed, James and Andy machine watched \u2013 looking for features identified on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/2013\/05\/02\/hungerford\/\" target=\"_blank\">geophysical survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/rL8ctZ\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8732\/16908249435_6aa860d76a.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1138\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whilst the trench was being machined, Hayley, Chris and James H set about piecing together and erecting the tent on site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/rHQu5w\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8694\/16882355366_db78cff8a3.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1139\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the team had taken a well-earned lunch break, we pressed on. The tent team were tasked in tidying the edges of excavation and troweling back the site, as James and Andy continued machine watching. As the trench was trowelled back several features stood out, some of which are the clearest we\u2019ve seen during the Lufton Project.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of today the team had made excellent progress: we have managed to remove all of the top-soil and sub-soil from our planned area of excavation, and we have trowelled back half of that area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/qP8pAU\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7615\/16285882924_ccc453afa9.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1140\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also had our neighbour visit us on site with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/luftonarchaeology\/2014\/07\/21\/week-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">infamous bread stealing dog<\/a>, he presented us with the brilliant sign pictured below. To serve as a warning to all those in camp!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/rL8ava\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8732\/16908242775_15475048c0.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_1130\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All in all we\u2019ve had an excellent day, even managing to avoid the rain! It was topped off by a visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masonsarmsodcombe.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Masons Arms<\/a>, which saw James and Andy deep in thought strategising tomorrow&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The excavation began in earnest today.
