What we’ve been up to in February

Newcastle University’s new Marketing Web Support service launched at the end of January. We’ve been hard at work, meeting stakeholders, developing and maintaining websites, and offering training.

Here’s what we’ve been up to in February.

Developments

Adam is currently working on research group pages for Animal Sciences and Agricultural Production Systems for the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

He and I are working with the School to deliver a redevelopment of the NU Farms website to showcase smart farming projects ahead of a conference at the end of March.

The School is competing with Leeds in delivering messaging about smart farming research and for student recruitment.

Catherine has built a new Go Mobile website for Sustainable Campus, which previously was in an old Contribute template that didn’t work well on mobile devices. Liz is working on delivering the content into that website for a March relaunch.

The Sustainable Campus website is close to receiving a new look, having been redeveloped in our responsive Go Mobile template, which will make it easier to use on mobile devices.

Catherine has also built sites for Partners Academic Summer School and Student Health and Wellbeing in the Go Mobile template. It’s our aim to populate these templates and dispense with the old Contribute websites in April and June respectively.

Many of the stakeholders in these smaller Contribute websites have been in contact to request moving into Go Mobile templates. We’re trying to incorporate sites we feel we can redevelop quickly and efficiently within our workflow. The one exception is the University’s Sports Centre, which needs to be looked at more strategically.

I have met to discuss new developments or redevelopments, with:

  • School of Natural and Environmental Sciences
  • School of Engineering
  • Law School
  • National Centre for Energy Systems Integrations
  • Supergen Energy Networks Hub
  • Sustainable Campus
  • NIHR Clinical Research Network Speciality Cluster
  • HASS School Managers
  • SAGE Marketing and Faculty Offices
  • HASS Faculty Office
  • Partners Academic Summer School
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Schools of English, Education and Modern Languages
  • FMS Faculty Office
  • Language Resource Centre
  • Newcastle University Sports Centre
  • School of Dental Sciences
  • Student Health and Wellbeing
  • NU Advancement/Alumni
  • Learning and Teaching Development

I’ve compiled a rough Web Roadmap for the six months and beyond, but this is obviously subject to anything else coming in.

Rationalisation

Liz has removed the old SAgE School website pages that were within T4, which had ceased to be relevant following the reorganisation in August 2017.

I have made initial contact with stakeholders for the Centre for Wildlife Management and Institute for Sustainability to look at the future of these websites.

The Centre’s website garnered fewer than 400 users in the past year and the Institute is an old project that has largely been usurped by Global Challenges.

Systems Operations

Peter has worked extensively on improving our outcomes with CookieBot and ensuring that we remain GDPR compliant.

I have met with Paul Thompson in NUIT Digital Platforms and there is a plan for overall improvements to the MyImpact service that we’re looking at.

An initial meeting has taken place with Stephen Wearn from the IT Service Desk, to look at how to better triage requests to the right place using NUService.

Maintenance

The entire team have worked hard to clear a backlog of NUService tickets that numbered at around 90 when the service launched.

The current number of unanswered tickets stands at 5, with most tickets being cleared quickly and efficiently. Development tickets are coming to me, and being answered within the 72-hour deadline.

Adam, Liz and I have worked on user experience/analytics/Siteimprove reports featuring recommendations on:

  • content design
  • information architecture
  • spellings and broken links
  • search engine optimisation
  • accessibility
  • readability

We’ve produced reports for web editors and worked on the maintenance of websites including:

  • The Business School
  • The School of Dental Sciences
  • Alumni
  • Supergen Energy Networks Hub
  • National Centre for Energy Systems Integrations

I have also provided analytics reports for:

  • IFM Undergraduate project
  • The School of Architecture
  • Central Marketing
  • Learning and Teaching Development Service
  • Engagement and Place

Training

Anne has prepared for and trained new web editors for all the Schools in SAgE, including:

  • School of Natural and Environmental Sciences
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Computing
  • School of Maths, Stats and Physics

She is also working on training requests for:

  • School of Dental Sciences
  • Sustainable Campus
  • School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences
