Mapping and delineating conservation priority interventions in the northern Kilombero Valley

Supervisory team in UK: Dr Marion Pfeifer, Miss Eleanor Moore

Partners: Dr Deo Shirima (Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania), IUCN Sustain, Reforest Africa NGO, and TANAPA

Keywords: SDGs, Aichi Targets, Stakeholder focus groups, Bioidversity data, Ecosystem services and disservices

Aim: Delineate possible interventions of conservation management/ restoration in the study landscape of Agrisys Tanzania. With a focus to maximise outcomes for people and biodiversity along the food security, biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation nexus.

Objectives and hypothesis:

In this research, you will look at biodiversity, habitat and social data collected in the Agrisys Tanzania project (BBSRC GCRF funded, 2019-2022). (1) You will use the spatially explicit data to map and identify hotspots of disservices, services and biodiversity. (2) You will look at narratives on conservation and restoration needs using outputs from discussions run with focus groups (stakeholders: farmers, government, industry and NGOs) to identify evidence – based interventions suitable to deliver on improved biodiversity and climate change mitigation outcomes (e.g. increased tree cover) whilst minimising impacts on social including climate change adaptation outcomes.

Outcomes:

  • Data management and analyses, including integration of data and knowledge frameworks from social and ecological sciences
  • Spatially explicit modelling and mapping using R
  • Synthesizing information into a report to be shared and discussed with stakeholders in Tanzania: discussed with stakeholder in Tanzania during a field trip
  • A paper for submission to a journal in the discipline

Target Journal: People and Society
