{"id":133,"date":"2026-04-21T08:18:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T07:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/nu-cusp\/?p=133"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:18:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T07:18:42","slug":"nucusp-members-at-gender-research-groups-spring-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/nu-cusp\/2026\/04\/21\/nucusp-members-at-gender-research-groups-spring-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"NUCUSP Members at Gender Research Group&#8217;s Spring Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Gender Research Group&#8217;s Spring Conference is taking place on Friday, April 24th, 12-3pm in HDB1.09.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NUCUSP members Abi Hockaday and Miranda Iossifidis are presenting their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abi Hockaday (English Literature, Language &amp; Linguistics), \u201cReading the Technodomestic in Science Fiction\u201d \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0I consider the relation between gender, the domestic, and technology, through a reading of\u00a0<em>Femizine<\/em>, the first British science fiction fanzine written for women, by women, in the 1950s. It is the humour and playfulness that mark what I term the \u2018technodomestic\u2019 in the fanzine\u2019s stories which helped create a community of women fans exploring cultural anxieties about women\u2019s place in the home \u2013 and in fandom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda Iossifidis<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0(Geography, Politics &amp; Sociology), \u201cResisting Population Control at Home and Internationally: Reproductive Justice and Campaigns against LARCs in the 1970s and 1980s\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 I explore the solidarities, networks and tensions in feminist conversations and encounters constellated around resistance to population control, in activism against long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs) in the 1970s and 1980s, considering how activists centred racism, classism, and ableism experienced by women, and how they connected coercive practices, and populationist ideas and interventions in the United Kingdom to global population control policies. I undertake a situated analysis of the activisms, drawing on archival material to show how they are shaped by distinct histories of colonialism, racism, and geographies. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gender Research Group&#8217;s Spring Conference is taking place on Friday, April 24th, 12-3pm in HDB1.09.
