{"id":31,"date":"2015-11-20T14:11:02","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T14:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/nualadavis\/?p=31"},"modified":"2016-03-11T11:30:51","modified_gmt":"2016-03-11T11:30:51","slug":"audacity-basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/nualadavis\/2015\/11\/20\/audacity-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"Audacity Basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Audacity is a really useful tool for creating audio files.\u00a0 These can be used for podcasts;\u00a0 audio feedback (as a student I&#8217;ve really appreciated &#8220;tone&#8221; <em>and\u00a0<\/em>learning points); \u00a0and edit together sound tracks from different sources.<\/p>\n<p>JISC&#8217;s\u00a0guide on the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk\/guide\/audio-feedback\">Audio Feedback for Assessment<\/a>\u00a0gives an excellent summary of the pros and cons of audio feedback.\u00a0 They also have a helpful page on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk\/guide\/creating-an-audio-podcast\/\">Creating an Audio Podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my examples where I&#8217;ve used Audacity for specific purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We recorded Dr Rob Collins and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/hadrians-wall\/3\/steps\/48595\">constructed a VideoScribe<\/a> to match the audio.<\/li>\n<li>Confronted with\u00a0a Petcha Kucha I used <a href=\"https:\/\/lplates4ever.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/12\/equivalence-and-a-petchakucha-challenge\/\">Audacity to record 40 second chunks <\/a>and practice the presentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to use &#8211; here are some basics:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-31-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/stream.ncl.ac.uk\/flash\/nuala.davis\/nutela\/AudacityBasics.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/stream.ncl.ac.uk\/flash\/nuala.davis\/nutela\/AudacityBasics.mp4\">http:\/\/stream.ncl.ac.uk\/flash\/nuala.davis\/nutela\/AudacityBasics.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>NB:\u00a0 If you are interested I recorded this using the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Record-your-screen-in-PowerPoint-2013-0b4c3f65-534c-4cf1-9c59-402b6e9d79d0\" target=\"_blank\">screen recording feature <\/a>that arrived in PowerPoint 2013 this February.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Audacity is a really useful tool for creating audio files.\u00a0 These can be used for podcasts;\u00a0 audio feedback (as a student I&#8217;ve really appreciated &#8220;tone&#8221; and\u00a0learning points); \u00a0and edit together sound tracks from different sources.
