There will be a range of stands in the Lindisfarne room, come and meet your colleagues across campus, hear their top tips and tricks, play with some new gadgets and talk to those using the technologies. The stands this year fall under two categories; Research Technologies and Smarter Working.
Research Technologies
DI – BESiDE – Built Environment for Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy
Economic, health, and ethical considerations all demand that the built environment be structured to support older adults in maintaining their quality of life long after transitioning to a care home environment.Understanding how to create such environments remains a key challenge facing architects and designers. We are carrying out research in care homes to tackle this challenge.
DI – Digital technologies for symptom monitoring and management in Parkinson’s
We display a range of our current work employing digital technologies to support self monitoring and management of symptoms of Parkinson’s. Our research engages the Parkinson’s community at all points of the process, to enable people living with the condition to take control of their health management through everyday technologies.
DI – e-Science Central
e-Science Central is a Cloud based Platform for Data Analysis and Machine Learning. It supports secure storage and versioning of data, audit and provenance logs and processing of data using workflows. Workflows are composed of blocks which can be written in Java, R, Octave or Javascript. e-Science Central is portable and can be run on Amazon AWS, Windows Azure or your own hardware. The uses of e-Science Central are diverse and range from storing and analysing physical activity data to large pipelines for genetic sequencing.
DI – SiDE – Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy
Poor health, disability, family breakdown, poverty and unemployment are just some of the reasons why people of all ages may become marginalised from society. SiDE aims to tackle social exclusion by designing digital technologies that deliver major social benefits.
DI – Tweet My Street
Tweet My Street is a tool which exploits the vast amount of rich data produced by Twitter users. Researchers including geographers and computer scientists are collaborating to understand how social media is used to overcome social barriers. Tweet My Street is used to analyse data from local communities, gathering opinions on education, government and cultural interests.
DI – MOVEeCloud
The need to maintain regular physical activity becomes increasingly important as we age, for the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and help prevent illness. Discovering the type and intensity of exercise a person undertakes is a difficult challenge. MOVEeCloud tackles this by identifying these measures individually, recording the patient’s movements, storing and analysing the data securely, for healthcare professionals to create bespoke exercise routines.
DI – Digital footprints in the sand
People who suffer from domestic violence are often unsure of where to turn, and many are afraid of the consequences of looking for help. We are working with the Angelou Centre – a Newcastle-based support centre for black and ethnic minority women – to design and develop technologies that can provide this vital assistance.
DI – The Cyber-Physical Systems Lab in Science Central
The Cyber-Physical Systems Lab develops tools and methodologies that allow engineers from different disciplines to develop complex cyber physical systems. The lab will form a significant part of the Digitally Enabled Urban Sustainability work performed in Science Central.
DI – Circus Challenge Game for Stroke Rehabilitation
Recovering from a stroke requires an extensive rehabilitation plan of repetitive movements using different parts of the body. Interactive games give patients the motivation to carry out these repetitive exercises to encourage the movement of limbs. Patients of all ages can be rehabilitated in an enjoyable way in the comfort of their own homes. The data generated can then be fed back to health care professionals to tailor treatment plans suitable to patients’ specific needs.
