2022

NU WOMEN NEWSLETTER
15 December 2022
We had a fantastic end to the year in the Boiler House yesterday for the NU Women Festive Social. It was great to have so many NU Women members together in one space – the first time since Christmas 2019!

Last week, we welcomed Jo Littler (City University) for the NU Women Annual Lecture, and there was a great conversation afterwards about process, pedagogy and activism. The blog post for the talk is here (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/blog/) .

Finally, a reminder about the first event in 2023 – some NU Women members have asked for opportunities to expand/share crafting and knitting knowledge. Kate Chedgzoy will be leading a “Knit and Natter” session on January 25^th (4-6). For more details (including details on where to resource your knitting needs), see here (https://forms.office.com/e/bH6krnGtqG) . Refreshments will be provided.

There won’t be a NU Women newsletter on January 1^st, as everyone will be off on holidays. The next one will be January 15^th, so please send through any items in advance of that.

Have a restful holiday!

NU WOMEN NEWSLETTER
15 FEBRUARY 2022
Dear All –

We know that many of our colleagues are taking part in industrial action this week. NU Women is standing with those on the physical and digital picket lines in the UCU national action about pensions, workload, and the fight for pay equality (https://www.ucu.org.uk/article/11896/Why-were-taking-action) .

NU Women is committed to pushing the institution towards achieving gender parity in its employment. As of 2020, the gender pay gap at the University is 18.1%, the ethnicity pay gap between Black and white staff is 14.8%, and the disability pay gap is 12.9%. Issues of pay disparity compound for women of colour, for disabled women, for trans women, and women with other marginalised identities.

A Newcastle UCU survey in August 2021 found that 85% of staff were working more than their expected working hours per week; and that 78% found their workload unmanageable at least half of the time. These conditions of overwork are aggravated by casualised employment and precarious working conditions. An ability to maintain work-life balance is a key area of concern for creating more equitable employment for women at the institution. Women are more often in parenting and caring roles, take on more labour at home, and have greater burdens put upon them to take on extra administrative tasks and emotional labour in the workplace. The productivity metrics of university work do particular injury to women employees.

In other matters, NU Women are asking that those members (who are in a position to do) considering donating menstrual products to the West End Foodbank to mark International Women’s Day. Our amazing interns have created the below poster which can be amended for each unit.

Dear all -

NU Women and its sister networks are supporting the EDI Fund-supported Intersectionality: Multitudes project. We are pleased to be co-hosting the forthcoming Intersectionality seminar series, which includes an upcoming talk by Alison Phipps (GPS) on February 2nd (4-5pm) on the importance of intersectional feminist frameworks in the age of #MeToo. You can sign up for the event

Thank you to those who attended our Writing Groups ‘How-To’, in which NU Women members met to discuss writing groups, to share experience, best practice, and thoughts on the use of writing groups in developing an involved and invigorated research culture. For a blog post written by one of our interns, Maia, please click
here (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/2022/01/26/writing-groups-who-what-where-and-when/) .

Finally, a number have asked what NU Women is doing for International Women’s Day. We are keeping it low-key this year, with many of our energies drained by COVID and fresh off our
Annual Lecture (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/2021/11/26/nu-women-annual-lecture/) . We note the Gender Pay Gap (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/media/wwwnclacuk/whoweare/files/nu-gender-pay-gap-report-2020.pdf) for Newcastle, and other HE institutions. We despair at the systemic and endemic violence done to women locally and globally. We also see the incredible grassroots work (and beyond) that many women and allies do to help make the world a better place.

For this International Women’s Day, we are asking two things:
1. Don’t make it about a single day in the year, and resist the neo-liberalisation of EDI agendas: on the first day of each month, for the next twelve months, ask how you can support and lift up a woman at Newcastle University, and in your own community. Pass it on.
2. If you can, and have the means, please donate menstrual items to the West End Food Bank (https://newcastlewestend.foodbank.org.uk/) .

We hope that Semester Two is getting off to a positive start for all our members.

NU WOMEN NEWSLETTER
15 JANUARY 2022
Dear all -

Our first newsletter of 2022! We hope you feel rested going into Semester Two, and are looking forward to spring.

There are three NU Women items to note for the coming weeks:

1. NU Women is hosting an event on January 17th on writing groups. Please attend this informal discussion to share ideas on how best to organise/make use of writing groups. We will be putting together a blog summarising top tips after this. To attend, please click
here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=13284141) .

2. We have been working with a new newsletter format (using MailChimp) for a year now, and we wanted to ask for feedback on how this is working for our members. If you can, please fill out the form
here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=13405970) .

3. You can sign up for the event
here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=13423731) . To find out more about this and all of the talks in this series, click here (https://www.multitudes.blog/speaker-series) .
