NU WOMEN NEWSLETTER
15 DECEMBER 2021

Dear all -
Our last newsletter of 2021! The University is closed on January 1^st, and we will all be taking much-needed time to connect with family and friends, as we are hoping you all are, so the next newsletter will be January 15^th.
NU Women and NU Parents hosted an event on blended working last week. This was a really important opportunity to share thoughts and experiences on how you are experiencing blended working. If you missed the event, please click here (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/2021/12/14/blended-working-a-resource-sharing-discussion/) for a summary. We will be feeding back on the outcomes to colleagues in People Services, and will use this to help shape future discussions about EDI and more in the institution.

NU Women is hosting an event in January on writing groups. Please do attend this informal session to share ideas on how best to organise/make use of writing groups. To sign up, please see here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=13284141) .

Finally, a reminder that N.E.S.T's winter appeal aims to meet a need for both basic support and also some fun, hope and happiness for children. Just £10 can fund a care package to one of the 300 children and adults who will be spending the holidays in North East hostels. All money contributes to spreading some joy and ensuring families are looked after this holiday season. To contribute, please click here (https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/NEST) .

We wish you a restful holiday season to you and your loved ones. Stay safe.

Dear all -

We hope you enjoyed the NU Women Annual Lecture last week. Mary Ann Sieghart gave a brilliant account of how women are often dismissed or ignored, and how women are taken less seriously than men. Thank you also to Professor Judith Rankin (Dean of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) for chairing, and to our student interns, Maia and Abi, for managing the tech side of things. For those that missed the event, please click
here (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/2021/11/26/nu-women-annual-lecture/) for the recording.

Do see below for a reminder of NU Women’s joint event with NU Parents next week – this is a supportive and generative space to talk about blended working. Please join to share your experience of how you are finding the return to campus, and the shift to blended working. This is being led by Michelle Wright and Paula Fitzpatrick, who will take forward concerns and experiences to the various central discussions about blended working.

1 SEPTEMBER 2021

Dear All –

NU Women runs an annual donation and gift-giving campaign, and we had planned to continue this by collecting scarves, hats and gloves/mittens throughout September. The collection box is beside the Reception in King’s Gate (and thank you to colleagues there for facilitating this), which NU Women interns will sort through before donating to N.E.S.T. (https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nusu.co.uk%2Fvolunteering%2Fdetails%2F536%2F&data=04%7C01%7CA.Hockaday%40newcastle.ac.uk%7C38fedaa3de474d88f63e08d96cb88424%7C9c5012c9b61644c2a91766814fbe3e87%7C1%7C0%7C637660362002122375%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=HLlIO55MlFNJi8auJuj1Ptr7eKIOxlFCthGsFDEtvqI%3D&reserved=0)

The situation in Afghanistan has substantially accelerated this collection, and N.E.S.T. are asking for donations of coats, clothing, and toiletries to be brought to the first floor of King’s Gate (Northern Stage level).

There are a range of organisations in Newcastle supporting refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan following the latest events. Dear All –

Some of you have asked about getting more involved with the NU Women Steering Group in the coming year, and we are pleased to say that we have some vacancies: click here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=11453826) to make an application to be a Steering Group member – we very much would like to hear from individuals from across the institution, in all sorts of roles - PS, academic, PGR. Please think about getting involved! The deadline is June 15^th.

There are a couple of items to flag here about the forthcoming months:
1. It is that time of year again – the NU Women annual survey. This is shorter than in previous years, and really is to find out what we can do to support you next year. 2. We are also inviting all PGRs to fill out a short ‘snapshot’ survey of EDI and PGR experiences. Please click here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=11538945) to do so. The form can be forwarded to anyone (past and present) who is a PGR at Newcastle. (deadline: June 15^th).
3. NU Women is trialling running its popular Writing Group programme over the summer months – if interested, click here (https://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=11553746) to fill out the EOI (deadline: June 25^th).

Many thanks to Barbara Read (Glasgow) who gave a talk on casualisation in higher education last month. Finally, a reminder that we are collecting hats, scarves, mittens and gloves to donate to N.E.S.T. Colleagues in the King’s Gate reception area have kindly agreed again (lockdown permitting!) that we can use that as a collection point for the month of September. If you are doing a spring clear-out, please hold onto hats, scarves, etc until September for us. Thank you again to everyone who has so far contributed their experiences of working at Newcastle for our Film. This is our final call - we are now particularly looking for academic colleagues - please see below!

NU Women has organised charity donation drives for the past couple of years, and we are delighted to continue this in the autumn.

If you are having a post-lockdown clear-out, please hang on to any scarves, mittens, gloves and/or hats (the wintry kind, not the wedding kind…) – we will be collecting those in September via a central location on campus, and donating them to local charities.

More anon from us – watch this space, and hang onto those hats and gloves.
Finally, I want to thank Hilary Noone, who is leaving the university - Hilary has been a mainstay of NU Women and her wonderful work to ensure EDI is at the heart of research culture is something for which we all owe her many thanks. Good luck, Hilary!

NU WOMEN NEWSLETTER
(15 MARCH 2021)

The Australian March 4 Justice; the femicide of Sarah Everard; the shocking images of women being roughly manhandled during the vigils in her name: all speak to the violence which women face throughout their lives.

Part of NU Women's Intersectionality Project will be considering the intersectional complexities of women's commutes and how we interact with urban spaces - as we begin to return to campus in the coming months.

We currently have two projects to reflect on our time in lockdown - please see below and get involved. The deadline for both is March 31st.

Muzlifah Haniffa started NU Women's March event season with her talk "The Celebration: Diversity, Unconscious Bias and Research Culture". The recording and blog post for this event can be found here (https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/nuwomen/2021/03/05/professor-muzlifah-haniffa-the-celebration-diversity-unconscious-bias-and-research-culture/) .

The Lockdown Shift Zine
We invite creative and reflective pieces around the themes of blurring boundaries between home and work, work-life balance, and gendered experiences of household labour and the workplace. Draw a picture, write a poem, share a (gin, anyone?) recipe, set out your daily schedule of homeschooling, or take a photo of how you’ve gotten through this year. The sky’s the limit here – how can you mark creatively what you’ve done over the past twelve months? For more details, see here (https://mcusercontent.com/87014e3a12e2406a56bf569b0/images/20723858-a8b5-4f72-9033-6d03cdfd106e.jpg) or email contact.nuwomen@ncl.ac.uk (mailto:contact.nuwomen@ncl.ac.uk) .
