And in the spirit of best of 2020 articles on film, TV shows and music I have dug into data.ncl\u2019s usage statistics to pull out the headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size:200%;color:#218ed0\"><strong>360<\/strong><\/span> data deposits (718 in total)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size:200%;color:#218ed0\"><strong>118 <\/strong><\/span>different researchers archiving data (174 in total) \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size:200%;color:#218ed0\"><strong>154,630 <\/strong><\/span> views<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size:200%;color:#218ed0\"><strong>47,190 <\/strong><\/span> data downloads<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our top three datasets based on views and downloads in 2020 were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.17634\/141353-1\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.17634\/141353-1\">Newcastle Grasp Library<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.17634\/137930-3\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.17634\/137930-3\">Handwritten Chinese Numbers<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.25405\/data.ncl.9577598.v1\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.25405\/data.ncl.9577598.v1\">EMG and data glove dataset for dexterous myoelectric control <\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The treemap below shows unsurprisingly that the most popular item uploaded was dataset (72%), then figure (15%) and media in a distant third (9%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2020\/12\/datancl.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2020\/12\/datancl.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2020\/12\/datancl-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2020\/12\/datancl-768x407.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>upload by item type<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And the USA was the country that accessed our datasets the most with nearly 100,000 views from the stars and stripes alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we move into 2021, I would love for this growth to continue and to see an increase in numbers across the board but in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A greater number of records of datasets where the data is held elsewhere<\/li><li>An increase in code and software being archived and shared (currently 3% of all items but we have a <a href=\"https:\/\/help.figshare.com\/article\/how-to-connect-figshare-with-your-github-account\">GitHub plugin to make it easy to send snapshots to data.ncl<\/a>)<\/li><li>The use of data.ncl as a platform to build dashboards upon that allows data to be manipulated and visualised <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s see what 2021 holds for data.ncl and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/academics-and-researchers\/research\/rdm\/sharing\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/academics-and-researchers\/research\/rdm\/sharing\/\">we&#8217;ll be here to help archive and share the full variety of data and code from research at Newcastle<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been the first full calendar year data.ncl has been available for our researchers to archive and share data.
