{"id":301,"date":"2021-09-14T12:04:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T11:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/?p=301"},"modified":"2021-09-14T12:04:01","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T11:04:01","slug":"newcastle-university-and-elsevier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/2021\/09\/newcastle-university-and-elsevier\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle University and Elsevier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2021\/09\/22109.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2021\/09\/22109.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2021\/09\/22109-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/files\/2021\/09\/22109-768x660.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The contract between academic publisher Elsevier and UK Universities is due for renewal in December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcastle University subscribes to Elsevier\u2019s ScienceDirect at a cost of \u00a31.1 million for the current subscription deal which enables University members to access Elsevier journals online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK Universities sector \u2013 on behalf of its researchers and students \u2013 entered negotiations with Elsevier with two core objectives: to reduce costs to levels UK universities can sustain, and to provide full and immediate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/academics-and-researchers\/research\/open-access\/\">open access<\/a> to UK research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open access to research allows for greater impact, expanding access worldwide and the potential for collaborative work to benefit the national and international research community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsevier is now the only major publisher that does not have a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/2020\/09\/transformative-agreements\/\">transformative open access agreement<\/a> in place. Subscription costs to Elsevier\u2019s journals are high and continuing to increase but do not include an open access agreement. Transformative agreements are also supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/\">cOAlition S<\/a> research funders and, from April 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/opening-research\/2021\/08\/new-ukri-open-access-policy-published\/\">UKRI\u2019s new policy<\/a> is similarly supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, a key practical aim of the negotiations is to secure a transformative agreement with Elsevier, which will support the core objective of immediate open access publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK Universities began negotiations in March 2021.
