{"id":1105,"date":"2024-03-11T10:10:32","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T10:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2024-03-11T10:10:33","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T10:10:33","slug":"new-research-and-teaching-agreement-with-mustansiriyah-university-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/2024\/03\/11\/new-research-and-teaching-agreement-with-mustansiriyah-university-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"New research and teaching agreement with Mustansiriyah University, Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Exciting new avenues for future collaborative oral history projects and research have been opened that build on the work of the Collective.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 20<sup>th<\/sup> and the 21<sup>st<\/sup> of February 2024, a delegation from Mustansiriyah University, Iraq, visited Newcastle University to sign a new research and teaching agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the Collective played a key part in facilitating the signing of a new research and teaching agreement between Newcastle University and Mustansiriyah University. Mustansiriyah University, located in Baghdad, is one of the biggest universities in Iraq, and already shares medical research projects with Newcastle. This recent agreement will open new possibilities, with oral historians from both universities working on joint ventures, including newly designed oral history courses and cooperative research initiatives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1107\" width=\"558\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2-425x300.jpg 425w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-2.jpg 1094w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iraqi delegation included Professor Tareq Hashim Abbood\u202f(Dean of the College of Arts), Dr. Mohammed Kadhim Ghafil (Head of the Department of Translation), Assistant Professor Alaa Fadhil Ahmed Al-Ameri (Head of the History Department) and Dr Mohammed Sameer, (Head of Research Committee and a lecturer with the University of Baghdad).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the two-day visit, several research roundtables were held with the delegates and Newcastle colleagues. This built on earlier exchanges that discussed potential project ideas from our colleagues in Iraq and how we might cooperate in teaching and research supervision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1113\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-5-1.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The in-person roundtables included inputs from undergraduate students, postgraduate researchers, associate researchers, and teaching and research staff. From these roundtables, several broad areas of interest in oral history emerged, which were in turn refined into new project ideas. Some areas of mutual interest were identified such as women\u2019s history, with links to Joe Redmayne\u2019s project on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women in Shipbuilding,<\/a> the history of environment and place, with input from projects such as Living Deltas and our work in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/2023\/10\/23\/partnership-research-environmental-oral-history-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a>; and histories of healthcare and technology, including Ally Keane\u2019s research on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/?s=Ally+Keane&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">augmented and alternative communication<\/a>. Broader themes surrounding post-conflict, rural history, labour and migration, and digital curation and archiving, based on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/2023\/03\/09\/from-a-lively-archive-in-bangalore\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hannah Janes Louwerse\u2019s<\/a> research also emerged.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-1024x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1115\" width=\"506\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-1024x484.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-768x363.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-1536x726.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1-500x236.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-7-1.jpg 1633w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact was first made between Professor Graham Smith and Professor Tareq Hashim Abbood at a Gertrude Bell Exhibition in 2023, and in subsequent discussions, the role of post-memory, particularly in reference to the life and legacy of Bell also emerged.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-3-2-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1119\" width=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-3-2-edited.jpg 479w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/files\/2024\/03\/Iraq-image-3-2-edited-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iraqi delegates were also taken on a historic tour of Newcastle by Associate Researcher Silvie Firch, and on a tour of the University by an undergraduate global ambassador. The city tour introduced our guests to the community-based projects that have involved Silvie and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/2019\/03\/15\/foodbank-histories-placement-reflection-by-jack-hepworth\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Hepworth<\/a> who also spoke about our public history teaching.
