{"id":242,"date":"2018-08-02T12:02:53","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T11:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/?p=242"},"modified":"2023-01-20T18:03:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T18:03:26","slug":"we-are-searching-for-voices-from-regions-shipbuilding-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/oral-history\/2018\/08\/02\/we-are-searching-for-voices-from-regions-shipbuilding-past\/","title":{"rendered":"Searching for voices from the North East&#8217;s shipbuilding past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Full Media Release: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/press\/articles\/latest\/2018\/08\/saveourshipyardshistory\/\">https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/press\/articles\/latest\/2018\/08\/saveourshipyardshistory\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Voices from a historic campaign to save the North East\u2019s shipyards are being sought in a bid to remember the real life experiences of those involved.<\/p>\n<p>The Oral History Unit&#8217;s Dr Alison Atkinson-Phillips wants to track down people who took part in the \u2018Save our Shipyards\u2019 campaign that took place from 1983-84 in a bid to stop the closure of yards on the Tyne and Wear.&nbsp;Workers from Swan Hunter on the Tyne and Austin &amp; Pickersgill on the Wear, their families, union leaders and local politicians, were interviewed for two short films known collectively as the \u2018Shipyard Tapes\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"contentSeparator containAsides textEditorArea\">\n<p>The first film \u2018The Price of Ships\u2019 explains the economics of the global shipping industry, highlights the strengths of the yards on the Tyne and the Wear and argues for further government support. The second film \u2018Down the Road Again\u2019 warns of the dangers of the yards returning to private ownership, cautioning that it risked returning to the type of unsecure, casual labour that shipbuilding was known for before nationalisation.<\/p>\n<p>Originally commissioned by the Tyne and Wear County Council, the two twenty minute films have been preserved and are part of the collections of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com\/yfa-nefa\">North East Film Archive<\/a>, who are working with Newcastle University on the project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"contentSeparator containAsides textEditorArea\">\n<p>Email <a href=\"mailto:oralhistory@newcastle.ac.uk\">oralhistory@newcastle.ac.uk<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Full Media Release: https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/press\/articles\/latest\/2018\/08\/saveourshipyardshistory\/ Voices from a historic campaign to save the North East\u2019s shipyards are being sought in a bid to remember the real life experiences of those involved.
