Windsor Terrace (Law)

The Law School pervasive wireless will be switched over on Friday morning (7th Aug) between 7am and 9am.

We will be starting to configure other buildings from next week include Claremont Tower & Bridge, Daysh, King George VIth and Armstrong. It will be a few weeks until we can schedule migrating any of these buildings.

The controller work is proceeding well and we plan to move over the first set of buildings after the current change freeze. More details will be announced closer to the migration date.

Cabling Update

Cabling work has been progressing. Windsor Tce (Law) has been completed and a few other buildings are close to completion. There should be news soon about migration of more buildings.

As part of the pervasive wireless project we need to replace all Cisco access points, even in buildings where we are not cabling. We have recently replaced the access points in the Team Valley Library Store, and are looking at replacing other isolated access points.

We are also working on introducing a new wireless gateway which will allow us to add more wireless controllers to the network. At some point we will need to move current buildings over to controllers on the new gateway. More details and a schedule for migrations will be released when we firm up our plans.

Cockle Park Farm

Cockle Park Farm was finally connected to the campus network last week. This week we now have campus wireless in many farm buildings.

The controller upgrades at the end of June went well. A known issue with the service is now fixed.

Installation of cabling for most of the remaining buildings on campus started last week. There will be more news about this soon.

Phase 3 Buildings Live

The migration of the 9 buildings this week went smoothly.

Next week from 15th June, cabling work will start at INTO halls. Cabling in other buildings will start on 29th June and is expected to last 4-6 weeks. We will start migrating over buildings to the pervasive wireless once cabling work is complete. More details about the remaining buildings will be coming soon.

Controller Upgrades

We are planning to upgrade the central wireless controllers the week of 22nd June to fix a software bug. Each controller manages a different “Quarter” of campus and will be upgraded on a different morning.

Tue 23rd June - Halls & Remote Sites
Wed 24th June - Main Campus
Thu 25th June - Robinson Quarter
Fri 26th June - Medical Quarter

Upgrades will start at approx 7am each morning and wireless will be down for approx 10-20 minutes while the controllers and access points are rebooted. This will only affect buildings covered by the new Pervasive wireless.

Cabling on the remaining buildings will start June 29th and will last 4 – 6 weeks. The list of buildings is on the Pervasive Wireless Rollout Schedule.

Next Group of Buildings

With exams ending soon, here is the schedule for moving the next set of buildings over to the Pervasive WiFi.

Monday 8th June – Baddiley Clarke, Paul O Gorman, Sports Centre, Claremont Terrace
Tuesday 9th June – Music Studio, Building Science, Ridley (Building 1), Devonshire
Wednesday 10th June – General Hospital (CAV)

Migrations will occur during the evening from approx 6:30pm onwards. Outages will only take seconds, the time it takes to reconnect to the new access points.

Update & ICFL

Almost all buildings from work over the Easter break are ready to go live. We have a one week window before Exams start but will hold off on most of these until after exams are complete.

Wireless in the Center for Life will be migrated next Tuesday morning (12th May) at 7am.

Cabling is expected to start on the rest of Phase 3 starting June 8th.

Phase 2 complete

Cassie & Drummond buildings were migrated successfully on Tuesday and the last of the halls have been moved onto the production wireless controllers today completing phase 2 of the migration. This means all of the new wireless access points (over 2000) are running on the final production service.

There are a few dozen access points that have been installed but are not working correctly which will be addressed in the coming weeks and over the Summer.

It is unlikely we will be able to get more phase 3 buildings on-line before Module selection and Exams force a change freeze. We will update the schedule and this blog once we have more information.

Cassie, Drummond and 6 Halls

The next 2 buildings from Phase 3 of the project, Cassie & Drummond, are ready and will be migrated over to the new WiFi on Tuesday 7th April at 6:30pm.

The remaining 6 halls will be migrated to the production controllers Tue 7th – Thu 9th during the day starting at 10am. These halls are scheduled as follows,

Castle Leazes (Tue 7th). Leazes Parade, Bowsden Court and Leazes Terrace (Wed 8th). Marris House and Richardson Road (Thu 9th).

We have also switched on 2.4GHz wireless in Cookson and Henry Wellcome buildings which are not covered by NUTH access points. We are planning to do the same in Leech where we can. We have no plans to turn on 2.4GHz in the Dental School at this time since this is not a University owned building.

A Bonus Building

The 5 buildings scheduled to be migrated to the new wireless infrastructure this week, Merz Court, Agriculture, Dental School, Kings Gate and Science Central Core building, were all successfully moved.

As a bonus we have also brought Easton Hall online today. This is the first of the Phase 3 buildings just recently added to the schedule. Other buildings will be added to the schedule in the coming weeks.

The Medical School is still scheduled to be migrated over on Monday evening.
