WORKSHOP WITH MARY MIDGLEY<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY <\/span>FOR<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of \u2018The Difference of Philosophy\u2019 Series<\/span><\/p>\n

We are pleased to announce a workshop with <\/span>acclaimed British <\/span>moral philosopher <\/span>Dr.<\/span> <\/span>Mary Midgley titled \u2018What is Philosophy <\/span>for<\/span>?\u2019<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop <\/span>will consist of a paper by Dr. <\/span>Midgley and a response by Dr. Rachael Wiseman (Durham University)<\/span>. This will be followed by\u00a0<\/span>a round table <\/span>discussion<\/span> <\/span>regarding the role and definition of philosophy<\/span> <\/span>which all attendees are encouraged to take part in<\/span>. <\/span>The workshop will take place on Saturday 27<\/span>th<\/span> February<\/span> <\/span>09.30-12.30<\/span> at the Great North (Hancock) Museum<\/span>, Newcastle. <\/span>Attendance<\/span> and participation <\/span>is free but space is limited<\/span>. The Difference of Philosophy<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop forms part of the series \u2018The Difference of Philosophy\u2019 which investigates the role and responsibility of philosophy in contemporary society. The project founders are Lisa Foran (Newcastle University), Martin <\/span>Gr\u00fcnfeld<\/span> (University College Dublin) and <\/span>Rozemund<\/span> <\/span>Ulj\u00e9e<\/span> (Leiden University). The first workshop \u2018Response and Responsibility\u2019 with Judith Butler and Jason Stanley can be viewed <\/span>here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Bios<\/span><\/p>\n

In her numerous books<\/span> and articles<\/span> <\/span>Midgleychallenges a reductive view of the human experience that seeks to explain <\/span>everything <\/span>through a rigid materialism. In works such as <\/span>Evolution as a Religion<\/span>\u00a0(1985), <\/span>Science as Salvation<\/span>\u00a0(1992 \u2013 the 1990 Edinburgh Gifford Lectures), <\/span>Science and Poetry <\/span>(2001), and most recently, <\/span>Are you an Illusion?<\/span> (2014); <\/span>Midgley attacks what she terms \u2018scientism\u2019 \u2013 a faith in scientific explanation that is close to religious. <\/span>FormerlySenior Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University<\/span>,<\/span> Midgley is now retired from teaching but continues <\/span>to be a prolific author.<\/span> She is a frequent contributor to <\/span>The Guardian<\/span> and is cu<\/span>rrently w<\/span>riting a<\/span> book<\/span> titled: <\/span>What is Philosophy For? <\/span> <\/span>Her autobiography<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>The Owl of Minerva<\/span>,<\/span> was published by Routledge in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Rachael Wiseman is Addison Wheeler Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Durham University. She is author of <\/span>The Routledge Philosophy Guidebook to <\/span>Anscombe\u2019s<\/span> Intention<\/span> (2016) and co-founder of The Integrity Project \u2013 a multi-disciplinary project looking at the meaning and value of integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
