{"id":125,"date":"2016-02-02T11:54:44","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T11:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/philosophy\/?p=125"},"modified":"2016-02-02T11:56:42","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T11:56:42","slug":"workshop-with-mary-midgley-what-is-philosophy-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/philosophy-blog\/2016\/02\/02\/workshop-with-mary-midgley-what-is-philosophy-for\/","title":{"rendered":"WORKSHOP WITH MARY MIDGLEY:  WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY FOR?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E13\"><span id=\"E14\">WORKSHOP WITH MARY MIDGLEY<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E15\"><span id=\"E16\">WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY <\/span><span id=\"E17\">FOR<\/span><span id=\"E18\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E20\"><span id=\"E21\">Part of \u2018The Difference of Philosophy\u2019 Series<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E23\"><span id=\"E24\">We are pleased to announce a workshop with <\/span><span id=\"E25\">acclaimed British <\/span><span id=\"E28\">moral philosopher <\/span><span id=\"E29\">Dr.<\/span><span id=\"E30\"> <\/span><span id=\"E31\">Mary Midgley titled \u2018What is Philosophy <\/span><span id=\"E32\">for<\/span><span id=\"E33\">?\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E34\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E36\"><span id=\"E37\">The workshop <\/span><span id=\"E38\">will consist of a paper by Dr. <\/span><span id=\"E39\">Midgley and a response by Dr. Rachael Wiseman (Durham University)<\/span><span id=\"E40\">. This will be followed by\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E40\">a round table <\/span><span id=\"E41\">discussion<\/span><span id=\"E42\"> <\/span><span id=\"E43\">regarding the role and definition of philosophy<\/span><span id=\"E44\"> <\/span><span id=\"E45\">which all attendees are encouraged to take part in<\/span><span id=\"E46\">. <\/span><span id=\"E47\">The workshop will take place on Saturday 27<\/span><span id=\"E48\">th<\/span><span id=\"E49\"> February<\/span><span id=\"E50\"> <\/span><span id=\"E51\">09.30-12.30<\/span><span id=\"E52\"> at the Great North (Hancock) Museum<\/span><span id=\"E53\">, Newcastle. <\/span><span id=\"E54\">Attendance<\/span><span id=\"E55\"> and participation <\/span><span id=\"E56\">is free but space is limited<\/span><span id=\"E57\">. To reserve a place please email\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E61\"><span id=\"E62\"><!--more-->The Difference of Philosophy<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E63\"><span id=\"E64\">The workshop forms part of the series \u2018The Difference of Philosophy\u2019 which investigates the role and responsibility of philosophy in contemporary society. The project founders are Lisa Foran (Newcastle University), Martin <\/span><span id=\"E66\">Gr\u00fcnfeld<\/span><span id=\"E68\"> (University College Dublin) and <\/span><span id=\"E70\">Rozemund<\/span><span id=\"E72\"> <\/span><span id=\"E74\">Ulj\u00e9e<\/span><span id=\"E76\"> (Leiden University). The first workshop \u2018Response and Responsibility\u2019 with Judith Butler and Jason Stanley can be viewed <\/span><a id=\"E77\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WecaTBx64p0&amp;list=PLHKVjBSDqMB43XGabLYzzfCTC0TQ7XGpb\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E78\" class=\"qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"E80\"><span id=\"E81\">Bios<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E82\"><span id=\"E83\">In her numerous books<\/span><span id=\"E84\"> and articles<\/span><span id=\"E85\"> <\/span><span id=\"E86\">Midgleychallenges a reductive view of the human experience that seeks to explain <\/span><span id=\"E87\">everything <\/span><span id=\"E88\">through a rigid materialism. In works such as <\/span><span id=\"E89\" class=\"qowt-stl-Emphasis\">Evolution as a Religion<\/span><span id=\"E90\">\u00a0(1985), <\/span><span id=\"E91\" class=\"qowt-stl-Emphasis\">Science as Salvation<\/span><span id=\"E92\">\u00a0(1992 \u2013 the 1990 Edinburgh Gifford Lectures), <\/span><span id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-stl-Emphasis\">Science and Poetry <\/span><span id=\"E94\">(2001), and most recently, <\/span><span id=\"E95\">Are you an Illusion?<\/span><span id=\"E96\"> (2014); <\/span><span id=\"E97\">Midgley attacks what she terms \u2018scientism\u2019 \u2013 a faith in scientific explanation that is close to religious. <\/span><span id=\"E98\">FormerlySenior Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University<\/span><span id=\"E99\">,<\/span><span id=\"E100\"> Midgley is now retired from teaching but continues <\/span><span id=\"E101\">to be a prolific author.<\/span><span id=\"E102\"> She is a frequent contributor to <\/span><span id=\"E103\">The Guardian<\/span><span id=\"E104\"> and is cu<\/span><span id=\"E105\">rrently w<\/span><span id=\"E106\">riting a<\/span><span id=\"E107\"> book<\/span><span id=\"E108\"> titled: <\/span><span id=\"E109\">What is Philosophy For? <\/span><span id=\"E110\"> <\/span><span id=\"E111\">Her autobiography<\/span><span id=\"E112\">,<\/span><span id=\"E113\"> <\/span><span id=\"E114\">The Owl of Minerva<\/span><span id=\"E115\">,<\/span><span id=\"E116\"> was published by Routledge in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-stl-PlainText\"><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font1-Calibri\">Dr. Rachael Wiseman is Addison Wheeler Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Durham University.
