{"id":98,"date":"2015-11-04T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T13:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/philosophy\/?p=98"},"modified":"2015-11-04T13:19:00","modified_gmt":"2015-11-04T13:19:00","slug":"tasks-for-the-week-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/philosophy-blog\/2015\/11\/04\/tasks-for-the-week-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasks for the week ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have decided\u00a0to put this all on one post and it is intended for students on the PHI1010 European Philosophical Traditions 1, PHI2003 Modern Ethics, PHi3001 Legitimacy and Reasons modules.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>PHi1010<\/h2>\n<p>By the end of consolidation week, you should have read Plato&#8217;s Theaetetus in its entirety, the extract from<a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449524-dt-content-rid-7531291_1\/courses\/N1516-PHI1010\/sextus%20empiricus%20pp%20131%20171.pdf\"> Sextus Empiricus<\/a>\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449524-dt-content-rid-7531292_1\/courses\/N1516-PHI1010\/sextus%2031%2071.pdf\">both<\/a>) and be up to date with the<a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449526-dt-content-rid-7315661_1\/courses\/N1516-PHI1010\/PHi1010%20Tutorials%202012%20semester%201%281%29.pdf\"> tutorial readings<\/a>. In order to further your understanding, I suggest a trip to the library with the reading suggestions for secondary material and a good keyword search in mind and read around the subject as well. You need to be able to quickly describe the problems with naive empiricism and \u00a0have some idea of why we need a theory of reality in order to justify our use of knowledge-language.<\/p>\n<h2>PHi2003<\/h2>\n<p>You should have read Hobbes up to chapter 21 and have read a substantial amount of secondary literature. In groups or as individuals, I also want you to start posting some answers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449635-dt-content-rid-7532033_1\/courses\/N1516-PHI2003\/John%20Stuart%20Mill%20capital%20punishment%281%29.pdf\">second\u00a0workshop<\/a> on the moral status of capital punishment found in Blackboard. Please add to the comments section below this post with your answers to the questions (at the end of Mill&#8217;s speech).<\/p>\n<h2>Phi3001<\/h2>\n<p>You should have read the relevant extracts from Rawls&#8217;s Theory of Justice and have an understanding of how his theory of justice is, according to him, more desirable\/rational than alternatives. You must learn the principles by heart and understand them. Secondary material a gogo\u00a0please. Also, I want you to start posting some answers after reading the workshop in<a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449697-dt-content-rid-7316835_1\/courses\/N1516-PHI3001\/sandel%20with%20hughlights.pdf\"> BB on Sandel<\/a>. (questions are <a href=\"https:\/\/blackboard.ncl.ac.uk\/bbcswebdav\/pid-2449697-dt-content-rid-7316833_1\/xid-7316833_1\">here <\/a>and refer to the numbers in the margins.) \u00a0A really good article which will help your understanding of Rawls.
