About

Phon-UP is a radical space for investigating innovative and effective methods and approaches to teaching phonetics and phonology.

While our primary disciplinary focus is phonetics and phonology, we welcome participants from all areas of linguistics and the speech sciences.

What is an unconference?

A conference typically has a hierarchy, a strict structure, and a set agenda. An unconference is instead led by the participants.

While the organisers have some particular topics and questions to serve as a springboard for discussion, the direction and the agenda (such that it exists) for the day will be determined by the participants.

Programme

As an unconference, there is no formal programme, and the organisers have set the following topics to be considered by participants. Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and topics for exploration too. These topics include:

  • Relinquishing control
  • Freedom and safety to explore
  • Playfulness
  • Ungrading
  • (Dis)comfort, both for instructors and students
  • Barriers to testing and implementing new and subversive methods

Due to the deliberately informal nature of Phon-UP, please do not feel any compunction about arriving late, leaving early, or otherwise participating outwith the set times of the gathering.

Do I need to register?

There is no registration. Just show up with yourself and your bright ideas (and any props or objects you wish to demonstrate!)

Public health considerations

Please only attend if you are feeling fully well, ideally having got a negative Covid test result. We encourage attendees to wear masks if possible.
