She then broadened that research scope to include investigation of other musculoskeletal tissues such as tendon, ligament and skeletal muscle, looking at the cell&#8217;s reaction to the production of mutant protein as well as the changes in the extracellular matrix and their biomechanical implications. She is specifically interested in cell-matrix interactions in musculoskeletal tissues in development, disease and during ageing. She is a member of the Editorial Board for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/matrix-biology\">Matrix Biology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/matrix-biology-plus\">Matrix Biology Plus<\/a> journals (Elsevier), and is passionate about disseminating science and engaging with the public. She led a WP9 (Dissemination, training and commercialisation) package of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sybil-fp7.eu\/\">EU-FP7 SYBIL project<\/a>, a Genomic Medicine PPI Working Group at the Institute of Genetic Medicine (IGM) in Newcastle, and chaired the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/igmengagement\/\">IGM Public Engagement committee<\/a> (2013-2019). She is currently a public engagement WP lead in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change-msca.eu\/\">MSCA CHANGE DN project<\/a> and the Chair of the Bursary Committee and an ex-officio committee member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bsmb.ac.uk\">British Society of Matrix Biology<\/a> (BSMB) Organising Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research Associates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/piroglab\/files\/2026\/03\/ella.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"136\" height=\"182\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/piroglab\/files\/2026\/03\/ella.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2725\" style=\"width:211px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/medical-sciences\/people\/profile\/elladennis.html\">Dr Ella Dennis<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Dr Dennis is the Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) on the MRC funded project researching drug repurposing for rare skeletal diseases, supervised by Prof Michael Briggs (lead PI), Dr Katarzyna Pirog (co-PI) and Prof David Young (co-PI). She joined us in 2023 as part of the EU Horizon Europe CHANGE MSCA network, to investigate the age-related complications in rare skeletal dysplasia. Roufaida is co-supervised by Prof Michael Briggs from Biosciences Institute (NUBI) at Newcastle University.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/piroglab\/files\/2024\/12\/maria-lazari.jfif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2374 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Maria Lazari <\/strong>(PhD student) &#8211; Maria is a PhD student funded by the Food and Environmental Research Agency (FERA) to study aggregation of muscle tissue in vitro, and assess its bioreactor compatibility and the nutritional profile for scaling up of engineered meat production. Cagla is a medical doctor and holds an MSc in Nanotechnology &amp; Regenerative Medicine from the University College London (UCL).
