This room will be available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Don’t forget that students are able to study in the Walton and Law libraries too.
As part of the Robinson Library refurbishment, we will be creating a single (Dewey) sequence of books, which we hope will make the whole collection easier to use. This book move will only begin after the examination period is over.
We will minimise the disruption as much as possible, but staff, researchers and dissertation students who are continuing with their studies and research through the summer may wish to consider borrowing essential books before this major move begins.
In addition, if you would find it helpful to extend your borrowing limit to allow you to borrow more books this summer, this can usually be arranged. Please contact your Liaison Librarian in the first instance.

We’re making the Robinson Library a better place to study in (watch this space for news as we start work this summer). This is how you have helped so far –
In May /June 2010 we asked HASS and SAGE postgraduate students, via an online survey, how they used the Library and what they wanted from it in the future. In 2011, we recruited two students to carry out observational research and gather feedback into how and where students study, both in the library and in other study spaces on campus. They held focus groups and interviews with postgraduate and undergraduate students.
We’ve also had discussions and received feedback from lots of University Staff / Student Committees, Boards of Studies and Faculty Teaching Learning and Student Experience Committees.
Finally we regularly receive formal and informal feedback and suggestions thorough our Tell Us What You Think forms and also via conversations with our staff on our Service and Information Desks and during workshops and teaching sessions.
We hope that our plans for the refurbishment of Levels 3 and 4 of the Robinson Library will address many of the issues raised. We aim to provide
Work begins after the examination period in June. There will inevitably be some disruption to library services during the summer, so we’ll keep you up to date with changes as they happen.
In anticipation of the major works about to take place in the Robinson Library, the Shefton Research Collection of books about Greek, Roman and Etruscan archaeology has been temporarily moved for safe-keeping to Level 1 in the Robinson Library.
This collection was built up by Emeritus Professor Brian Shefton (1919-2012) and forms an important body of research material within the Robinson Library. Our book collection complements the Shefton Gallery of Greek and Etruscan archaeology, a collection of archaeological material, which can be seen in the Great North Museum.

Current print journals (and their back issues) can now be found on Level 1 in the Robinson Library. As part of the summer refurbishment in the Robinson Library, we will also create a new browsing and reading area alongside our current journals.
To date, we have moved all journals from PER 010 up to PER 700. The remaining journals are moving this week and will be in their new home by Friday 4th May.

Our collection of printed Government Publications is moving to a new location on Level 1 in the Robinson Library. Government Publications were previously located in 3 different areas and on two separate floors of the library; this move will enable us to create one consolidated collection. In preparation for the summer refurbishment of the Robinson Library, the music scores which used to be on Level 1 have been moved upstairs to Level 3. They are now at the end of 800 book sequence (near the windows which overlook Carlton Terrace/Jesmond Rd West).
The Library catalogue has been updated but if you can’t find them, please just ask a member of staff.
During summer 2012, major refurbishment works will take place on the upper floors in the Robinson Library. New lighting, data and electrical cabling will be installed, new carpets fitted, toilets refurbished and new furniture purchased to create new study and research areas on Levels 3 and 4. The Library cafe will also be refurbished during this period.
Starting after the exam period, large sections of Levels 3 and 4 will be taken over by contractors and will be unavailable as study space. Although Levels 1 and 2 are largely unaffected, it is likely that the entire building will be disrupted to some extent.
We are actively investigating and identifying other quiet study areas on campus to direct our users to, so that they can continue their studies without interruption / distraction from the noise of building work.
We are also using this opportunity to create a single sequence of books, starting on Level 3 and moving up to Level 4. This is a significant stock move which will require us to move every volume in the Library. There will be periods of time when items are in transit and at such times we will introduce a book retrieval service to ensure you can still get the material you need.
The summer vacation is the only opportunity we have to make significant changes to the Library and we regret that this will impact on staff, researchers and dissertation students who are continuing with their studies and research through this period.
