Quizlet is a learning tool used to create and use flashcards online as well as educational games. Quizlet can be accessed online via the website or through the Quizlet application, which is available on any device. When creating your own flashcards you can keep them private, add them to a particular group, or share it with the public. This also means that one can access other people’s flashcards either through the public forum or the through a class one has joined. Pros
Collaboration
Due to the sharing capabilities, whether it is to the public or a certain group of people, this tool can be very collaborative. This is exceedingly important because it increases one ability to share knowledge, and it has been shown that collaborative studying is a better technique for retaining accurate information. Also this means that sometimes one can find a set of flashcards covering a particular topic which someone else might be more knowledgeable on.
Entertaining/Interactivity
Once flashcards are made on the desired topic, they can be used in forms other than flashcards. For example there are multiple games that can be played using them. This helps to encourage people to actually study the flashcards, particularly with children, because it is more interactive and fun. Also one can compete again their friends using the same flashcards in games, which is a further incentive to study, especially for those with more of a competitive nature. The interactivity of Quizlet does not only stop with the games, for example you can also star flashcards that you struggle with more in order to study them more often.
Multiple learning styles
This tool helps people of almost all learning styles, for example auditory learners will benefit from the listening function which means that the device will read out what’s written on the cards. Whereas more visual learners might benefit from the ability to add picture to the cards and reading the flashcards. Kinaesthetic learns however might learn better from the act of actually making the flashcards as well as the games that can be played with them. Overall this website is flexible regardless of learning style, and it can be adapted to fit individual’s needs for studying.
Cons
Unreliable
Even though there are multiple positive aspects about the collaborative nature of Quizlet, this can also mean that anyone can create flashcards. This can mean that some information can be intentionally or accidentally incorrect, and thus teaching others incorrect information. (However this is not as big of an issue if one is using this tool just for their own flashcards or they’re using flashcards that they know are accurate).
Requirement of membership
Some features, like adding a picture to ones flashcards, are only available to membership (which costs money) holders. Meaning that unless you are willing to pay some of the better features aren’t accessible.
Conclusion
Overall I would highly recommend this application to everyone (4.5/5 stars), in particular students, regardless of the multiple flaws this tool contains. This is because there are more positive aspects that outweigh the negative parts, and because most of the flaws can be overcome.
