Weds 4th March, 1pm – 2pm, Henry Daysh Building HDB 6.02: Lecture – Record Covers as Research<\/strong> – Gerard Ryan will introduce a practice-based research approach that treats the vinyl record and cassette as formats for inquiry. Drawing on his parafictional music project Le Clich\u00e9, he shows how the album can function as a compact research device: music, artist identity, artwork, liner notes, track listings, and related videos become materials through which to think about a whole range of topics such as value, nostalgia, identity, fandom, and the logics of collecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weds 11th March, 3pm – 5pm, Henry Daysh Building HDB 5.15: Workshop – Record Covers as Practice-Based Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following on from the talk above, participants will take part in a hands-on workshop to design their own vinyl record cover as a practice-based research artefact. Blank record sleeves and glue will be provided. Participants should bring a small set of found objects and images to incorporate, such as packaging, labels, receipts, photographs, coins, hotel \u201cdo not disturb\u201d signs, cassettes, floppy disks, or small electronic components. The emphasis is on making as analysis: selecting, assembling, and composing materials to develop a question, an argument, or an atmosphere that can travel across disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are pleased to announce that Sabina and Joe Sallis will be delivering a workshop titled \u2018Dance of Commoning: Forest Garden Effervescence as Sonic Resistance\u2019 on the 18th<\/sup> March. Sabina and Joe led a very popular workshop during the Sound + Environment symposium last September and we are very pleased to have them deliver another workshop for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staff and Students working in creative sound practice across the Sound + Environment Research Group will present an immersive sound concert over a 16 loudspeaker orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert will feature Visiting Researcher Gerard Ryan from the Universitat Rovira I Virgili in Barcelona. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weds 18th Feb, 2pm – 4pm, Farrell Centre: Workshop & Electromagnetic Soundwalk with Gerard Ryan (CLICK HERE FOR SIGN-UP, PLACES LIMITED)<\/a><\/strong>: The workshop will introduce the conceptual framing of the electromagnetic soundwalk as a way of listening to the infrastructures of consumption, followed by a guided walk in and around central Newcastle. A debrief session will then invite participants to reflect on what they heard and how this alters their understanding of everyday consumer environments. The activity can be offered to students across Music, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and related disciplines, and potentially opened to wider university staff and local partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
