View the <a href=\"http:\/\/courierarchive.ncl.ac.uk\/\">Courier Archive online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Courier alumni Mark Sleightholm has begun documenting the history of our student newspaper on a dedicated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/courierhistory.wordpress.com\/\">Courier History site<\/a>. This gives a fascinating insight into reporting trends, recurrent stories and issues, and profiles of the different sections through the ages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this Courier guest blog series, we have added to this site\u2019s content and illustrated it with images from the digitised Courier archive.<\/p>\n<p>We are kicking off this Courier guest blog series with:<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/courierhistory.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/16\/1948-55-the-early-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>1948-55 The early\u00a0years<\/strong><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>In 1948 what is now Newcastle University was known as King\u2019s College and formed part of the federal University of Durham. Early in the year several Durham students established the\u00a0<em>Palatinate<\/em>\u00a0newspaper, and in October one member of the editorial team, Allan Marsh, decided to set up a paper for the Newcastle campus. Anyone was invited to help produce the paper, \u201cregularly or spasmodically\u201d, while Stuart Shaw was appointed editor. Particular controversy came in 1953 with a series of articles by Stanley Brodwin, an American student at King\u2019s, and an aspiring playwright. His candid style and criticisms of British customs prompted fierce replies in the letters page, with his plays attracting similar outrage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1039\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2017\/02\/1953-10-16_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1039\" class=\" wp-image-1039\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2017\/02\/1953-10-16_04-655x1024.jpg\" alt=\"'I'll dig you later in the U.S.A.' by Stanley Brodwin, Friday 16th October 1953\" width=\"410\" height=\"636\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;I&#8217;ll dig you later in the U.S.A.&#8217; by Stanley Brodwin, Friday 16th October 1953<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At this point the students\u2019 union was split between two institutions: the Students\u2019 Representative Council, which dealt with politics, representation and societies, and the Union itself, run by the Union Management Committee, which ran the union building and organised social events.
