The idea initially came about in 1939 after a\nmeeting between Noel Carrington and Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin Books,\nwith the creation of the company a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original idea was to publish a series of children\u2019s non-fiction books which were a success. The first Puffin storybook was entitled <em>Worzel Gummidge<\/em> and appeared in 1941. During the early years Puffin Books encountered problems such as paper rationing during World War II and libraries still preferring hardback books rather than paperback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/09\/F-TOD-WOR-WORZEL-GUMMIDGE-FRONT-COVER-ILLUSTRATION-897x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Title page of Worzel Gummidge by Barbara Euphan Todd\" class=\"wp-image-2717\" width=\"440\" height=\"506\" \/><figcaption>Title page of <em>Worzel Gummidge<\/em> by Barbara Euphan Todd, illustrated by Tony Ross (OUP, 2002), text copyright \u00a9 Barbara Euphan Todd 1936, reprinted by permission of Oxford University Press. (Book Trust Collection, FICTION TOD WOR) <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Under\nits first editor, Eleanor Graham, Puffin aimed to publish 12 titles per year.\nDuring the 1950s, stories which allowed children\u2019s imaginations to wander were\npublished. Titles included <em>Charlotte\u2019s\nWeb<\/em> and C.S. Lewis\u2019s <em>The Lion, The\nWitch and The Wardrobe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under\nthe editorship of Kaye Webb, children\u2019s publishing increased during the 1960s\nfrom 151 to 1,213 titles which included reprints of such classics as <em>The Hobbit <\/em>. New titles at this time\nincluded <em>Stig of the Dump.<\/em> A picture\nbook list and teenage fiction began to be published as well as the introduction\nof <em>The Puffin Book Club,<\/em> which still\nexists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Titles\npublished during the 1970s and 1980s included <em>The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory <\/em>and\nthe<em> Spot the Dog<\/em> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent\ntitles include <em>Harry and his Dinosaurs <\/em>and\nthe <em>Charlie and Lola<\/em> series which\nhave both been televised.&nbsp; Roald Dahl\u2019s\npopularity as an author has led to an annual celebration which takes place on\n13<sup>th<\/sup> September.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2020 marks 80 years since the creation of Puffin Books, which are the children\u2019s division of Penguin Books.
