During World War I,&nbsp;auxiliary army huts were placed in the Quad, where they remained until&nbsp;after World War 2,&nbsp;operating as makeshift classrooms.&nbsp;The Quad was also&nbsp;a thoroughfare for cars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1005\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/06\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/06\/3.jpg 1005w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/06\/3-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/06\/3-768x497.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/06\/3-464x300.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1005px) 100vw, 1005px\" \/><figcaption>Old Quadrangle with auxiliary army huts 1935-1949, NUA\/UNCAT\/quadrangle pre 1949, Newcastle University Archives, Newcastle University Special Collections, GB 186<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This all changed between 1947 and 1949, when&nbsp;the Quad was&nbsp;laid out and planted as a&nbsp;memorial garden. The garden is dedicated to members of the University community who lost their lives during&nbsp;the two world wars. A&nbsp;memorial&nbsp;plaque&nbsp;can be seen on the low wall&nbsp;in front of you as you walk through <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/2021\/06\/02\/the-arches\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/2021\/06\/02\/the-arches\/\">the&nbsp;Arches<\/a>.&nbsp;At least&nbsp;276 staff and students from Armstrong College and Newcastle College of Medicine lost their lives in World War I&nbsp;alone&nbsp;(these two institutions formed the origins of Newcastle University).&nbsp;The Quad&nbsp;remains&nbsp;the&nbsp;venue for&nbsp;Remembrance&nbsp;Day services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit&nbsp;this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/speccollstories.ncl.ac.uk\/Newcastle-University-at-War\/#:~:text=Universities%20at%20War%20was%20a,students%2C%20alumni%2C%20or%20staff\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/speccollstories.ncl.ac.uk\/Newcastle-University-at-War\/#:~:text=Universities%20at%20War%20was%20a,students%2C%20alumni%2C%20or%20staff\">online&nbsp;exhibition<\/a>&nbsp;to learn more about World War I and Newcastle University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernest Marsden Bettenson.
