Design work began after the end of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;World&nbsp;War&nbsp;with the intention of creating new&nbsp;purpose built&nbsp;accommodation for the School of Engineering which had previously&nbsp;been located in&nbsp;the Armstrong Building and other temporary spaces around the university.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The space incorporated laboratories and workshops that were designed to be easily accessed for the handling of heavy equipment and machinery.&nbsp;The new building&nbsp;included space for Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Agricultural and Marine Engineering and mathematics.
