RMS Titanic sank during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, after hitting an iceberg. The Titanic was built at Harland and Wolff, Belfast and was the largest passenger liner in the world at the time. The accident resulted in the loss of over 1500 lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News of the tragedy spread around the world and the sinking was huge news in the media. Punch included a dedication to those who drowned.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cTears for the dead, who shall not come again<\/em><br><em>Homeward to any shore on any tide!<\/em><br><em>Tears for the dead! But through that bitter rain<\/em><br><em>Breaks, like an April sun, the smile of pride.<\/em><br><br><em>What courage yielded place to others\u2019 need,<\/em><br><em>Patient of discipline supreme decree,<\/em><br><em>Well may we guess who know that gallant breed<\/em><br><em>Schooled in the ancient chivalry of the sea! P., Charles Philips Trevelyan wrote to his daughter, asking if Miss Clarke had told her of the accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter reads,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cHas Miss Clarke told you the dreadful story of the ship-wreck of the Titanic? It struck on an ice-berg and went down and hundreds of people were drowned.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2022\/04\/CPT-4-1-9-73-2-CROP1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2022\/04\/CPT-4-1-9-73-2-CROP1-656x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Letter from Charles Philips Trevelyan to Pauline Trevelyan, 20th April 1912.\" class=\"wp-image-3539\" width=\"362\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Letter from Charles Philips Trevelyan to his daughter, Pauline Trevelyan<\/em>, 20<sup>th<\/sup> April 1912.<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/special-collections\/browse\/collection_details\/?id=139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trevelyan (Charles Philips) Archive<\/a>, CPT\/4\/1\/9\/73<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>His wife, Mary Trevelyan, known as Molly, wrote in her diary of the tragedy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThe last week has been overshadowed by the most terrible shipping disaster that has ever happened. There are two giant White Star ships, The Olympic and The Titanic, the biggest liners afloat. The Titanic with 2,200 on board, started on her maiden voyage at the end of last week and on Sunday night, just before midnight, she struck an iceberg, 600 miles from the American coast and sunk in 2.5 hours. All the women and children were saved, but hardly any men. There were 13 lifeboats full, and overfull. The titanic marconied for help, and the Carpathia came under full steam, and arrived at dawn to fill the boats but no Titanic. The accounts are heartrending, and one could hardly read them without tears.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2022\/04\/CPT-2-7-13-1-CROP1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/files\/2022\/04\/CPT-2-7-13-1-CROP1-663x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Diary entry extract of Mary Trevelyan, 20th April 1912\" class=\"wp-image-3540\" width=\"415\" height=\"650\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Extract from Mary Trevelyan&#8217;s diary, 20<sup>th<\/sup> April 1912. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/special-collections\/browse\/collection_details\/?id=139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trevelyan (Charles Philips) Archive<\/a>, CPT\/2\/1\/13<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The former Professor of Classics at Armstrong College, John Wight Duff, wrote of how the disaster was mentioned in the Church service he attended at Croft, on 21<sup>st<\/sup> April 1912.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diary entry from 21<sup>st<\/sup> April 1912 reads,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThe Rector\u2019s sermon was on Exod. Included are cuttings about another passenger who perished, the journalist W. T. The wreck of the Titanic was eventually discovered in September 1985, when it was discovered to have split into two., but due to deterioration the ship has never been raised.&nbsp; There have been further expeditions to the wreck to recover items, leading to various exhibitions about it around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many books, fiction and non-fiction including Clive Cussler\u2019s Raise the Titanic and films, including James Cameron\u2019s Titanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years a Titanic Quarter has been developed in Belfast which is proving to be a popular visitor attraction and ensuring that the name Titanic lives on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 15th April 1912 was a dark day in maritime history.
