The HRV biofeedback clinic

What does the biofeedback clinic involve?

At Newcastle University we are offering students, athletes and coaches the opportunity to take part in a HRV biofeedback clinic. This clinic will involve six sessions lasting roughly 30 minutes each (some may be longer or shorter), held weekly in the Dame Margaret Barbour Building (DMBB).

During each session, the athlete will have two physiological sensors attached to their body – one to a finger measuring heart rate and one around their waist measuring respiration. They will be asked to pace their breathing at specific rates to find their resonant frequency. After this, we will train the athlete to breathe at their resonant frequency (RF) without the aid of a pacer.

To get the most from the training, regular home practice is recommended. Therefore, we will also ask that athletes do paced breathing at their resonant frequency every day for 5 minutes (or longer, if they want), using a smartphone app. This will help them learn to accurately breathe at their resonant frequency without the need for equipment or researchers (i.e., they will learn to be able to use the technique on demand).

From a research perspective, we will also ask the athlete to complete a survey about emotional regulation, perceived stress and perfectionistic tendencies before the clinic, immediately after the clinic, and six weeks after the clinic.

Please look at this video presentation if you would like more information about the clinic.
