To celebrate, we&#8217;ve written a poem looking back at his extraordinary life and hoping that someday we can follow in his footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Born in London in 1926,<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s since won the hearts of all the Brits.<br \/>\nDavid didn&#8217;t always know all about\u00a0the wild,<br \/>\nBut his interest was sparked as a young child.<br \/>\nIn fact, he was very much in the dark,<br \/>\nUntil that thrilling day at Bradgate Park<br \/>\nWhen he discovered his first fossil,<br \/>\nWhich led to a future so colossal.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1950s came David&#8217;s first TV show,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-785\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/stem\/files\/2017\/05\/0e8396605fcd34cdf9f9c8d11c909679-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"0e8396605fcd34cdf9f9c8d11c909679\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/stem\/files\/2017\/05\/0e8396605fcd34cdf9f9c8d11c909679-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/stem\/files\/2017\/05\/0e8396605fcd34cdf9f9c8d11c909679.jpg 491w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><br \/>\nAll over the world, the team would go.<br \/>\nThe programme was called zoo quest,<br \/>\nAnd today may have caused a protest<br \/>\nAs it saw David catching animals for London zoo<br \/>\nAnteaters, chimps and rare birds too.<\/p>\n<p>David soon stopped taking \u00a0these creatures<br \/>\nAnd helped conserve their wonderful features.<br \/>\nHe showed us the magical Great Barrier Reef<br \/>\nAnd little ants that cut up and carry a leaf<br \/>\nTo feed it to something big and fungal.<br \/>\nHe also took us into the depths of the jungle<br \/>\nTo see the great apes and what a thriller,<br \/>\nWhen he cuddled that huge gorilla!<\/p>\n<p>David searched for a dragon on the isle of Komodo<br \/>\nAnd uncovered the secrets of the extinct dodo.<br \/>\nHe took us to the arctic for polar bears in the snow<br \/>\nAnd in the dark showed us worms that glow.<br \/>\nAnd who can forget that time in the cave,<br \/>\nWhen a bat flew into the face or Sir Dave.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-782 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/stem\/files\/2017\/05\/pervianfrog.jpg\" alt=\"pervianfrog\" width=\"220\" height=\"143\" \/>Look at all the species named after you,<br \/>\nA dragonfly, Peruvian frog and echidna too,<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s\u00a0also the goblin spider and Namibian lizard,<br \/>\nDavid Attenborough- a true ecological wizard.<br \/>\nThen there&#8217;s Boaty McBoat Face &#8211; what a boat,<br \/>\nNow named for you, lets hope it forever floats.<\/p>\n<p>From showing us delightful animals on screen,<br \/>\nTo being knighted by the Queen.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve travelled the breadth of the Earth,<br \/>\nNow let&#8217;s celebrate the day of your birth.<br \/>\nSo let&#8217;s have a slice of birthday battenberg,<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s to you Sir David Attenborough!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Sir David Attenborough&#8217;s 91st birthday.
