To help you get the best out of our resources we\u2019ve put together this list of some of the most useful online databases and collections for Archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s dive in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scopus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA61108923400002411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scopus<\/a> is a large, interdisciplinary database of peer-reviewed literature, providing an index of articles, book chapters, conference papers and trade publications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main advantages of using Scopus is that it provides a lot of useful information about the articles it indexes. This includes full reference lists for articles and cited reference searching, so you can navigate forward and backward through the literature to uncover all the information relevant to your research.&nbsp; You can also set up citation alerts, so you can be informed of new, relevant material automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/qCu-obYMFsE\n<\/div><figcaption>Scopus tutorial: How to expand your search results<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scopus includes other smart tools that can help you track and visualise the research in your area, including author and affiliation searching, visual analysis of search results, a journal analyser, and author identifier tools. You\u2019ll find<a href=\"https:\/\/service.elsevier.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/14799\/supporthub\/scopus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> tutorials<\/a> and advice on using these features in the Scopus support centre and on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLmFEGsa7e9nG8nvIpVld6xc6-G9gH9Uxb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube Channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JSTOR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA61113365970002411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JSTOR<\/a> provides access to full-text materials including scholarly journals, books and book chapters in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The NRHE contains over 420,000 records of archaeological sites and buildings in England and its territorial waters. The record is very broad in scope and contains information on sites dating from prehistoric times to the modern period, from finds of early stone tools to contemporary architecture, from Roman roads to disused railways and 19th century shipwrecks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although PastScape is no longer being updated, it is still a useful resource for finding descriptions of sites or buildings, surveys and excavation information and other useful links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BAR Digital Collection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA61180011730002411\" target=\"_blank\">BAR Digital Collection<\/a><\/em> gives full text access to over 3,100 titles published from 1974 to date. The collection includes both BAR\u2019s British and international series, and covers archaeological research, excavation reports and other important series from around the world. You can browse or search the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA61180011730002411\" target=\"_blank\">entire collection<\/a>&nbsp;in various ways (e.g. by location, author, subject, time period or series). Each report is also individually catalogued on Library Search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encyclopedia of Ancient History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA5194325050002411\" target=\"_blank\">Encyclopedia of Ancient History<\/a>&nbsp;is a reference work containing a comprehensive collection of 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century scholarship on the ancient Mediterranean world.&nbsp; Entries span the bronze age through to 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century Byzantium and extend to all Mediterranean civilisations including the Near East and Egypt.&nbsp; Materials include articles, images and maps of the ancient world. Our video guide below demonstrates how to browse and search for information using the Encyclopedia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Finding Information:  Encyclopedia of Ancient History\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3QvDAR9Z5l0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Video Guide to finding information on the Encyclopedia of Ancient History<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abstracts of International Conservation Literature (AATA)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aata2-stage.getty.edu\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AATA Online<\/a> is a comprehensive database containing over 150,000 abstracts of journals and conference proceedings related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage, including archaeological sites and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can browse the database by topic or use the search tab to do a <strong>quick<\/strong> keyword search, a more detailed search in particular<strong> fields<\/strong> or a <strong>text <\/strong>search for a more detailed keyword search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results tab allows you to sort items by date, author or title, and export record details to a reference management tool such as EndNote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical Abstracts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA6195094730002411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Historical Abstracts<\/a> provides bibliographic records for thousands of journals and books, including several key archaeology journals such as Historical Archaeology, International Journal of Historical Archaeology, International Journal of Nautical Archaeology and World Archaeology.&nbsp; Content covers the history of the world (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present, including world history, military history, women&#8217;s history, history of education, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video explains how to search effectively in EBSCOHost databases such as this one: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/DjKNxqiuwpY\n<\/div><figcaption>EBSCOHost Tutorial: Creating an Advanced Search<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aph<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libsearch.ncl.ac.uk\/permalink\/f\/1jraif3\/NCL_ALMA5195111440002411\" target=\"_blank\">l\u2019Ann\u00e9e philologique<\/a> is a bibliographic database, indexing journal articles and book chapters about the classical world, going back to 1924. It\u2019s an excellent resource for researching topics related to Greek and Latin literature and linguistics, Greek and Roman history, art, archaeology, philosophy, religion and more. It\u2019s a great resource for finding documentaries or critical opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can view archived programmes, create clips and playlists, and see transcripts to help with citation and translation. You can also search other user\u2019s public playlists to see curated lists around topics similar to your own.
