Starting this January, Newcastle University will be introducing food waste bins in every university-owned accommodation kitchen. Look out for a small green caddy in your kitchen, along with a roll of bin bags to get you started. Here\u2019s everything you need to know&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"642\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2025\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1072\" style=\"width:506px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Image: The new food waste caddies. The left bin has a capacity of 7.5 litres, while the right bin holds 5 litres.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Can Go in the Food Waste Caddy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can put almost any type of food waste into the bin, whether it\u2019s cooked or raw. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grains, pulses, and vegetables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meats, pastries, and eggs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bones and small teabags<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Should Stay Out?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few items that should <em>never<\/em> go in the caddy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Packaging of any kind (even if it\u2019s food-stained or says its biodegradable)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tinfoil or glass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liquids (these can make a mess!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using the Bin Liners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll provide you with bin liners for your food caddy, which are removed during processing. If you run out of liners, please ask at your reception for a refill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taking Out Your Food Waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your caddy is full, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tie the bag tightly to prevent spills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head to your accommodation\u2019s rubbish site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for the red wheelie bin marked \u201cFOOD WASTE\u201d near the recycling stations and place your bag inside<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where Does Your Food Waste Go?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once collected, your food waste is transported by our waste contractor, Biffa, to <a href=\"https:\/\/gapgroupuk.com\/companies\/gap-organics\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/gapgroupuk.com\/companies\/gap-organics\/\">GAP Organics<\/a> in Gateshead.
