Since then, it has grown to become the world\u2019s largest fashion activism movement, reaching over 80 countries worldwide. The movement challenges the fashion industry\u2019s exploitative systems and pushes for a future that prioritises people and the planet. Through campaigns, education and community action, the movement helps people understand the issues in fashion and take steps to drive change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\/frw-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fashion Revolution Week<\/a> is taking place from Tuesday 22<sup>nd<\/sup> April till Sunday 27<sup>th<\/sup> April 2025. This year, the theme is \u201cThink globally and act locally,\u201d encouraging us to reflect on how we can all play a part in transforming fashion, wherever we are. In this blog, we\u2019ll explore what that looks like here in Newcastle &#8211; from local initiatives to simple everyday actions you can take to be part of the Fashion Revolution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2025\/04\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1213\" style=\"width:460px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Buy second-hand\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Buying pre-loved items has become a growing trend amongst conscious consumers not just to save money, but as a way to resist fast fashion. By 2027, the global second-hand apparel market is expected to grow 3 times than the global apparel market overall (ThredUP, 2023). Second-hand shopping reduces waste, extends the life of clothing, and lowers your carbon footprint. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in Newcastle, the second-hand scene is thriving, with vintage shops, charity stores, and markets offering everything from upcycled hoodies to retro handbags. Some charity shop hotspots include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clayton Street, Central Newcastle\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gosforth High Street, Gosforth\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shield\u2019s Road, Byker\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chillingham Road, Heaton\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whitley Bay High Street (if you fancy a trip on the Metro)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also worth checking out the following: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/blaydoncarboot\/?locale=en_GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blaydon Carboot Sale<\/a> takes place every Sunday at the Blaydon Rugby Club, Swalwell\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/durhamvintage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Durham Vintage<\/a> host a stall in the Quayside Market every Sunday, and host frequent warehouse sales\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/gingers-flea-market-newcastle-tickets-1296998590699?aff=erelexpmlt&amp;_gl=1*85l972*_up*MQ..*_ga*OTQ5MDM5NzE4LjE3NDQ2MjMyMDY.*_ga_TQVES5V6SH*MTc0NDYyMzIwNS4xLjAuMTc0NDYyMzIwNS4wLjAuMA..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ginger\u2019s Flea Market<\/a> is an annual flea market held in the Boiler Shop. The event is taking place on Sunday 4<sup>th<\/sup> May.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nusu.co.uk\/events\/id\/1083-vintage-vera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vintage Vera<\/a> is ran in the Newcastle Student Union Basement and contains endless racks of jumpers, jeans and t-shirts. Their next event is on Thursday 8<sup>th<\/sup> May.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenheartcollective.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Heart Collective,<\/a> based in Team Valley, stocks a vibrant mix of retro fashion and pieces made from sustainable fibres like bamboo and organic cotton. They also have refill stations and reuse packaging materials as part of their wider commitment to sustainability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Shopping second-hand locally ties directly into this year\u2019s theme of thinking globally and acting locally. When unsold clothing in the UK is shipped abroad &#8211; often to countries in the Global South &#8211; it can overwhelm local markets and contribute to growing textile waste dumps (WRAP, 2017). By supporting second-hand fashion here in Newcastle, we help slow down that cycle and reduce the burden on communities elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Repurpose older items\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to easily extend the life of a clothing item is by upcycling, tailoring or mending your existing items. There are many alteration businesses dotted around Newcastle, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starstitchnewcastle.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StarStitch<\/a> , located on Saville Row. From installing a new zipper, to mending tears, your favourite items will easily be revived for a fraction of their original price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, if you don\u2019t feel like visiting a tailor, there are plenty of local groups designed to help you harness your DIY sewing skills. Here are a few ideas:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/baltic.art\/whats-on\/3K-baltic-sewing-bees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Baltic Sewing Bee<\/a> takes place every Thursday, bringing together a network of keen sewers who can help you with any small sewing projects\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hutonthegreen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hut on the Green<\/a> is in Gosforth Central Park and teach sewing classes, as well as a range of other creative workshops\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastlecitylearning.ac.uk\/subjects\/creative-arts\/textiles-courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newcastle City Learning<\/a> offer classes on garment making, mending and upcycling.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By repairing and reusing, we reduce our impact on the global fashion system while supporting skills and sustainability in our own community. By trading clothes you no longer wear for something new-to-you, you extend the life of garments and help reduce demand for fast fashion. There are a few swap points around Newcastle including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepeoples.exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The People\u2019s Exchange<\/a> in Ouseburn allow you to \u201cShop, Swap or Drop\u201d old garments. If you bring in a batch of items, you can earn a percentage of their resale value or receive store credit to spend on something new.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mynsu.co.uk\/events\/id\/970-clothing-swap-shop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northumbria University<\/a> have two upcoming swap shop events at their Student\u2019s Union. The next even is taking place on Wednesday the 30th of April.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/themagichatcafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Magic Hat Cafe<\/a> has recently held swap shops, usually on the weekend. Keep an eye on their page for any upcoming events!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like upcycling and mending, clothing swaps keep clothes in circulation and out of landfill &#8211; a simple way to act locally while thinking globally. These small, local choices ripple outward, challenging the fast fashion system and reducing its impact on people and the planet.
