Whether you are a regular rider or are considering cycling to work for the first time, it is a perfect opportunity to start! Information on these facilities are available on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainable-campus\/themes\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cycling page.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional resources such as tips on bike storage, cleaning, and repairs are available in our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/2025\/04\/22\/bike-maintenance-handy-tips-to-keep-your-wheels-on-the-road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bike Maintenance Blog.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff and students can join the <strong>Bicycle Users Group (BUG)<\/strong> on Teams for updates and advice by emailing <strong>sustainable-campus@newcastle.ac.uk<\/strong> with the subject line \u201cJoin BUG.\u201d\u00a0We currently have over 460 members on the Teams channel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University also participates in the government-backed <strong>Cycle to Work Scheme<\/strong>, which enables staff to purchase bikes and safety equipment through salary sacrifice, resulting in significant cost savings. Free confidence sessions are available through <strong>The Big Bike Revival<\/strong>, designed to help cyclists of all skill levels build road confidence and improve their skills. These sessions are open to anyone aged 18 and over. These sessions provide minor repairs and comprehensive bike health checks (MOTs) to ensure bicycles are safe and ready for the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since September 2024, a total of <strong>25 Dr Bike sessions<\/strong> have been held across six different campus locations, with <strong>424 bikes<\/strong> serviced so far. Additionally, two Bike Weeks have been organised alongside WATBike to promote cycling and bike maintenance awareness across the University community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To coincide with Cycle to Work Day, a special Dr Bike session will take place at the Medical School. This session is open to all staff and students, but we recommend arriving early to secure a slot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Date<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Location<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Time<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What3Words<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Thursday 7th August<\/td><td>Medical School Reception Entrance<\/td><td>10:00 am &#8211; 15:00 pm<\/td><td>count.rally.olive<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tips for New Cyclists&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re considering starting your cycling journey, here are some essential tips to ensure safety and security:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always wear a helmet\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obey traffic lights and road signals\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t ride on the pavement unless a sign says you can\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use lights and reflectors so you are clearly visible\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t use headphones or a mobile while cycling\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remove lights and accessories from your bicycle when it is parked\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always securely lock your bicycle with at least one &#8216;Sold Secure&#8217; certified cycle lock and only use purpose-designed Sheffield stands or racks\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t leave your bicycle on campus overnight\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If possible, arrange adequate insurance to cover any theft or damage to your bicycle\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"10\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Join BUG to see if colleagues have any other helpful information for you or can supply information about recommended cycle routes\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope this blog has given you some useful insights and inspired you to consider cycling as part of your daily routine.
