{"id":1466,"date":"2026-01-14T14:29:01","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/?p=1466"},"modified":"2026-01-14T14:29:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:29:57","slug":"newcastle-universitys-gold-cycle-friendly-employer-accreditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/2026\/01\/14\/newcastle-universitys-gold-cycle-friendly-employer-accreditation\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Cycle Friendly Employer Accreditation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are pleased to share that Newcastle University has been awarded a Gold Cycle Friendly Employer Accreditation from Cycling UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclinguk.org\/workplaces\/cycle-friendly-employer\">Cycle Friendly Employer<\/a>\u00a0(CFE) accreditation\u00a0is an internationally recognised standard for promoting active travel in the workplace. Organisations are assessed and can achieve a\u00a0Bronze, Silver or Gold\u00a0accreditation \u2013 and we are proud to have achieved gold!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assessment looks at everything from an organisation\u2019s cycling facilities and infrastructure to workplace culture and policies, all focused on making it easier for colleagues to cycle to and from work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1467\" style=\"width:412px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image.png 674w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-300x239.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-624x498.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Professor Jane Robinson<\/strong>, <em>PVC of Business, Partnerships &amp; Place and the Executive Board lead for sustainability said:\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThe Gold Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation recognises the progress we have made to date in enabling active travel at Newcastle University and supports our commitment to be sustainable in all that we do. As someone who regularly cycles to work, I know the difference this initiative has made and hope it will encourage more people to travel sustainably in the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of our key initiatives that contributed to the gold accreditation include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our bi-weekly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainable-campus\/events\/event-items\/dr-bike-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Bike<\/a>&nbsp;sessions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainable-campus\/themes\/travel\/cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bike&nbsp;repair stands<\/a>&nbsp;on the city and Helix campuses&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our extensive network of Sheffield stands and secure stores&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provision of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/hub\/people-services\/Pages\/Pay%20Progression%20and%20benefits\/Cycle-Scheme.aspx\">Cycle Scheme<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our partnerships with local charities and organisations that support cycle commuting in Newcastle, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/watbike.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WATBike<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclinguk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cycling UK<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our active&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainable-campus\/themes\/travel\/cycling\/\">Bicycle Users Group<\/a>&nbsp;on Microsoft Teams&nbsp;(you can&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:sustainable-campus@newcastle.ac.uk?subject=Join%20BUG\">join<\/a>&nbsp;today)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"453\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1469\" style=\"width:249px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-2.png 453w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2026\/01\/image-2-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Dr Alistair Ford, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and member of the University\u2019s Sustainability Committee and Bicycle User Group, said:\u00a0\u201cThe Gold Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation is a recognition of the\u00a0hard work\u00a0that the University is doing to enable staff and students to travel sustainably to campus. The accreditation\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0great progress but importantly it also requires continual improvement to ensure more colleagues feel able to cycle in the future.
