{"id":991,"date":"2024-10-30T15:21:45","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T15:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/?p=991"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:38:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:38:55","slug":"green-impact-launch-and-leaf-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/2024\/10\/30\/green-impact-launch-and-leaf-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Impact Launch and LEAF update!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At Newcastle University, we recognise that the climate crisis must be addressed communally, and we cannot meet the sustainability targets set out in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/mediav8\/sustainable-campus\/files\/NU_Climate%20Action%20Plan%202019-20_AW_Smaller%20size_compressed%20(1).pdf\">Climate Action Plan<\/a> without the efforts of all our colleagues and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Green Impact<\/strong> and <strong>LEAF<\/strong> are two amazing programmes available for our colleagues at the university, with the opportunity for participants to win bronze, silver, and gold awards for sustainability. Earlier this month, the Environment Awards recognised and celebrated the achievements of our colleagues and students over the past year, with 11 teams receiving Green Impact awards and 10 teams receiving LEAF awards. A massive congratulations to those teams!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, read on to find out how you can get involved in the next programme of Green Impact or LEAF, and play your part in increasing environmental sustainability on campus!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"430\" height=\"114\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-993\" style=\"width:280px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-4.png 430w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-4-300x80.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Green Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Impact is a United Nations award-winning programme which promotes environmentally and socially sustainable behaviour across organisations. At Newcastle University, colleagues can sign up to Green Impact and create teams within their work area, with actions assigned to complete in the online toolkit. The toolkit is aligned with the UN Sustainability Goals, with themes such as energy, water, waste, travel, biodiversity, communication, and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great opportunity to improve your knowledge on environmental issues and contribute to meaningful sustainable change in your workplace, whilst collecting some awards to display!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get involved:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>Sign up to <a href=\"https:\/\/toolkit.sos-uk.org\/greenimpact\/newcastle\/login\">Green Impact\u00a0online<\/a> from the 11<sup>th<\/sup> of November.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chat to your colleagues in your work area about Green Impact teams and either join one that\u2019s already been created or create a new team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email <strong>sustainable-campus@newcastle.ac.uk<\/strong> to join the Green Impact Teams channel, and chat to other teams!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work through your assigned actions. Each action grants a certain number of points which then add up to the bronze, silver, and gold awards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our friendly student auditors will come round to check your progress later in the year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Environmental Awards will be held in June, with engraved recycled slates for teams that made it to Bronze, Silver, or Gold.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"152\" height=\"153\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-994\" style=\"width:116px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-5.png 152w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/10\/image-5-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>LEAF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our laboratories are essential in enabling the groundbreaking research conducted at Newcastle University, and scientific research is vital in mitigating the climate crisis. However, traditional laboratory practices can come with unintended environmental impact (Freese et al, 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF, or the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework, is an online platform for laboratory users designed by UCL to improve the sustainability and efficiency of laboratories. Similar to Green Impact, lab teams work through sustainability actions to reduce waste, water, and energy along with improving the efficiency of other resources. Photo Credit: Chris Bishop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sign up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.ucl.ac.uk\/leaf\/leaf_external\">LEAF login portal<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Register with your institutional email, then login and either join an existing lab, or request a new lab (if your lab is not already listed).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After your account is verified, work with your team through the bronze, silver, and gold criteria.
