{"id":267,"date":"2020-05-10T11:48:13","date_gmt":"2020-05-10T10:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/theodoreschrecker\/?p=267"},"modified":"2020-05-10T11:49:32","modified_gmt":"2020-05-10T10:49:32","slug":"superb-virus-reads-from-around-the-web-10-may-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/theodoreschrecker\/2020\/05\/10\/superb-virus-reads-from-around-the-web-10-may-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Superb virus reads from around the Web &#8211; 10 May update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Canadian\nBroadcasting Corporation news team \u2013 yes, a state broadcaster that still does\nreal journalism! \u2013 takes a look <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinteractives.cbc.ca\/longform\/cargill-covid19-outbreak\">inside\nthe slaughterhouse<\/a> that has produce one of Canada\u2019s largest clusters of\ncases, and the working conditions that virtually guaranteed its spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/369\/bmj.m1557.abstract\">Scottish researchers\nand Martin McKee<\/a> point out that the pandemic response itself will have\nnegative health effects, which seems bleedin\u2019 obvious, but for some reason most\nof the health research community prefers to ignore the point, and indeed much\nelse about the post-pandemic future.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/05\/08\/andrew-cuomo-eric-schmidt-coronavirus-tech-shock-doctrine\/?\">Naomi\nKlein points out<\/a> that big technology firms in the US are using the pandemic\nas a platform for new systems that will ratchet up inequality, making the\nbillionaires even richer and expanding the precariat.&nbsp; (<em>The\nIntercept<\/em>, where this piece appeared, is proving indispensable for\ntruth-seekers in these times.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two\narticles in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, which is\nmaking its coronavirus coverage free at the moment, are also valuable.&nbsp; One offers a succinct description of how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/05\/whats-south-koreas-secret\/611215\/\">South\nKorea dealt with the virus<\/a>, and what should be learned from its\nexperience.&nbsp; The other is a searing\nexamination of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/05\/americas-racial-contract-showing\/611389\/\">racism\nrevealed in multiple ways<\/a> by the US response to the pandemic.&nbsp; For anyone still under the impression that it\u2019s\na civilised country, this is a must-read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, <em>The Times \u2013 <\/em>unfortunately behind a\npaywall \u2013 offers a thoughtful take on the question <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news-review\/supermodeller-neil-ferguson-should-we-trust-his-science-wsmrgtz23\">\u2018Supermodeller\nNeil Ferguson: should we trust his science\u2019<\/a>?
