Newcasle University is located in the beautiful city of Newcastle in the North East of England. The city is well connected by train to other major UK cities, such as London, Manchester and Edinburgh, and by plane to central hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris. On this page, we provide some basic guidance on the best routes for getting to (and around) Newcastle, and accommodation options in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling to Newcastle by Plane<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle has its own International Airport<\/a>, from which you can fly to several European and international airports. There are regular connecting flights to major hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, you can fly to other nearby airports in the UK, including Edinburgh and Manchester, and easily get to Newcastle by train from those destinations (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle International Airport is connected to the city (and conference) venue by the Newcastle Metro system<\/a>, bus, and taxi services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling to Newcastle by Train<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle is easily accessible by train from London. There are several direct train services every day from London King’s Cross, with the journey lasting around 3 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, you can also get to Newcastle by train from Edinburgh (Scotland), which takes roughly two hours, or Manchester in three hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these train services require bookings in advance, and you can book these through the Trainline website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting around Newcastle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite having many public transport amenities, including a Metro system<\/a>, Newcastle is a small city, where it is relatively easy to walk from place to place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also an extensive bus network around the city, and you can use taxi services or ride apps, such as Uber or Bolt, to get around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best routes to the venue will depend on where you are travelling from, and we recommend that you use Google Maps, or a map app like Citymapper<\/a>, to help you plan your journeys around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accommodation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle has many hotels and places for accommodation, which include major UK hotel chains (Travelodged, Premier Inn) and hostels. You can searh for accommodation that meets your needs and budget requirements using the NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI)\u2019s online directory and search tool<\/a>, or a hotel\/hostel booking website such as Booking.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are travelling on a tight budget, you may wish to check the Newcastle Central Travelodge<\/a> and Newcastle City Centre (The Gate) Premier Inn<\/a> both of which offer relatively cheap options, and are a short walk\/ride away from the conference venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Attractions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle is a beautiful northern English city (or ‘Toon<\/a>‘), which is known for its stunning bridges, pubs, live music scene, football culture, and art galleries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many art venues in the city, including the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art<\/a>, the Laing Art Gallery<\/a>, and other DIY art spaces such as The Lubberfiend<\/a> and the Star and Shadow Cinema<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During your stay, you can also visit the sea-side town of Whitley Bay<\/a>, which is connected to the city centre via the Metro (30 minute ride away).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just outside the city, you can also visit UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Hadrian’s Wall<\/a>, the Durham Castle and Cathedral<\/a> (short train ride away), or the luscious Northumberland National Park<\/a>, which boasts many renowned hiking routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
