{"id":245,"date":"2017-04-05T11:51:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T10:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=245"},"modified":"2017-03-27T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T10:51:11","slug":"music-students-deliver-enterprising-event-at-seven-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/music-students-deliver-enterprising-event-at-seven-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Music students deliver enterprising event at Seven Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In March 2017, a group of third year students on <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\"><strong>Newcastle University\u2019s<\/strong><\/a><strong> third year <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/modules\/mus3095\/\"><strong>Music Enterprise module<\/strong><\/a><strong> delivered a <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/whats-on\/events\/122982\/musical-creepy-crawlies\"><strong>Musical Creepy Crawlies<\/strong><\/a><strong> event at <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\"><strong>Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Here\u2019s the full story\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With rhythm and rhyme being a key feature of picturebooks, there&#8217;s\u00a0an interesting synergy between children\u2019s books and music. So it seemed only natural to me to\u00a0explore collaborations between Seven Stories and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/music\/\">Music at Newcastle University<\/a>. Meeting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/staff\/profile\/janenolan.html#background\">Jane Nolan<\/a>, Teaching Fellow in Enterprise in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/\">School of Arts and Cultures<\/a>, her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/modules\/mus3095\/\">Music Enterprise<\/a> third year module sounded like a perfect way to start working with Music. Jane says: \u2018<em>In music and the creative industries, students need to prepare for self-managed, freelance and portfolio careers as well as for employment, and the<span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><i><span id=\"0.2877518921922275\" class=\"highlight\">Music<\/span> Enterprise module helps <span id=\"0.3497812749118636\" class=\"highlight\">students<\/span> do this through the challenging and authentic experience of creating, organising and delivering a <span id=\"0.47754918911033806\" class=\"highlight\">music<\/span>al event, working in small teams.\u2019<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_249\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-249\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-249 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2017\/03\/IMG201703050950581_edited-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"All ready for the percussion workshop. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After discussing the opportunity with Seven Stories\u2019 Programming team, I delivered a short presentation to the Music Enterprise cohort back in October\u00a0to tell them a bit more about Seven Stories, the sort of event we would be interested in, and the spaces available. And I was really pleased when a group approached me a couple of weeks later!<\/p>\n<p>Amy, Lucy, Aimee-Beth and Gina were interested in hosting their event at Seven Stories because \u2018<em>we knew that they would be really supportive of our event\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Lucy), \u2018<em>it allowed for our event to be different from typical gig nights\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Amy) and \u2018<em>the rooms were perfect for the workshops and the final performance\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Gina) that the group were planning.<\/p>\n<p>The group came to Seven Stories to pitch their event to us before Christmas. They proposed running vocal and percussion workshops on the theme of bugs and insects. Aimee-Beth says: <em>\u2018Creepy crawlies tied in with Seven Stories&#8217; insect theme for spring.\u2019<\/em> Lucy adds: <em>\u2018It also meant we had a really good choice of children&#8217;s books to work with.\u2019<\/em> It sounded really interesting, so Seven Stories gave them approval to go ahead\u2026<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-248\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-248\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2017\/03\/IMG201703050949021Edited-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The students used picturebooks as the inspiration for their workshops. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following that meeting, the group developed their workshops, planned logistics for the event and organised communications to promote Musical Creepy Crawlies. Jane says of this process: <em>\u2018<\/em><i><span id=\"0.008637281383239603\" class=\"highlight\"><em>S<\/em>tudents<\/span>\u2019 reflections and feedback confirm that the experience of organising and presenting a <span id=\"0.607258387006929\" class=\"highlight\">music<\/span>al event during the module enhances skills and confidence, personal resilience and professional development, and can also add to their CVs.<em>\u2019<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday 5<span style=\"font-size: 12px\">th<\/span>\u00a0March 2017, Amy, Lucy, Aimee-Beth and Gina delivered their event. Amy\u00a0says: <em>\u2018I felt like overall the event ran well, even though I was a bit nervous on the day. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What did participants think? <em>\u2018From the parents&#8217; feedback, it seemed like everyone who attended really enjoyed it,\u2019<\/em>\u00a0says Aimee-Beth. And the parents\u00a0themselves told us that <em>\u2018it was very good for all young children &#8211; ours is 6 is and it was good for her age range &#8211; but little ones were enjoying it too!\u2019\u00a0<\/em>Another parent commented: <em>\u2018thank you &#8211; my son loves creepy crawlies so good topic!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And what did the students learn from the experience? Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lorna Duncanson, Seven Stories\u2019 Programming Co-ordinator, said: <em>\u2018It was lovely to have such fun\u00a0and accessible musical workshops at Seven Stories!\u2019<\/em> And from Jane\u2019s perspective, <em>\u2018<\/em><em>the <span id=\"0.8017323076862586\" class=\"highlight\">Music<\/span>al Creepy Crawlies team put a huge amount of thought, imagination\u00a0and\u00a0hard work\u00a0into their workshop, which was clearly very much enjoyed by the children and well received by the parents.
