In March 2017, a group of third year students on <\/strong>Newcastle University\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> third year <\/strong>Music Enterprise module<\/strong><\/a> delivered a <\/strong>Musical Creepy Crawlies<\/strong><\/a> event at <\/strong>Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/strong><\/a>. Here\u2019s the full story\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

With rhythm and rhyme being a key feature of picturebooks, there’s\u00a0an interesting synergy between children\u2019s books and music. So it seemed only natural to me to\u00a0explore collaborations between Seven Stories and Music at Newcastle University<\/a>. Meeting with Jane Nolan<\/a>, Teaching Fellow in Enterprise in the School of Arts and Cultures<\/a>, her Music Enterprise<\/a> third year module sounded like a perfect way to start working with Music. Jane says: \u2018In music and the creative industries, students need to prepare for self-managed, freelance and portfolio careers as well as for employment, and the\u00a0<\/i><\/span>Music<\/span> Enterprise module helps students<\/span> do this through the challenging and authentic experience of creating, organising and delivering a music<\/span>al event, working in small teams.\u2019<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

After discussing the opportunity with Seven Stories\u2019 Programming team, I delivered a short presentation to the Music Enterprise cohort back in October\u00a0to tell them a bit more about Seven Stories, the sort of event we would be interested in, and the spaces available. And I was really pleased when a group approached me a couple of weeks later!<\/p>\n

Amy, Lucy, Aimee-Beth and Gina were interested in hosting their event at Seven Stories because \u2018we knew that they would be really supportive of our event\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Lucy), \u2018it allowed for our event to be different from typical gig nights\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Amy) and \u2018the rooms were perfect for the workshops and the final performance\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Gina) that the group were planning.<\/p>\n

The group came to Seven Stories to pitch their event to us before Christmas. They proposed running vocal and percussion workshops on the theme of bugs and insects. Aimee-Beth says: \u2018Creepy crawlies tied in with Seven Stories’ insect theme for spring.\u2019<\/em> Lucy adds: \u2018It also meant we had a really good choice of children’s books to work with.\u2019<\/em> It sounded really interesting, so Seven Stories gave them approval to go ahead\u2026<\/p>\n

Following that meeting, the group developed their workshops, planned logistics for the event and organised communications to promote Musical Creepy Crawlies. Jane says of this process: \u2018<\/em>S<\/em>tudents<\/span>\u2019 reflections and feedback confirm that the experience of organising and presenting a music<\/span>al event during the module enhances skills and confidence, personal resilience and professional development, and can also add to their CVs.\u2019<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n

On Sunday 5th<\/span>\u00a0March 2017, Amy, Lucy, Aimee-Beth and Gina delivered their event. Amy\u00a0says: \u2018I felt like overall the event ran well, even though I was a bit nervous on the day. But we had great support from Seven Stories which was a massive help.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

What did participants think? \u2018From the parents’ feedback, it seemed like everyone who attended really enjoyed it,\u2019<\/em>\u00a0says Aimee-Beth. And the parents\u00a0themselves told us that \u2018it was very good for all young children – ours is 6 is and it was good for her age range – but little ones were enjoying it too!\u2019\u00a0<\/em>Another parent commented: \u2018thank you – my son loves creepy crawlies so good topic!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

And what did the students learn from the experience? Gina and Aimee-Beth\u00a0reflected on having to \u2018make on the spot decisions\u2019<\/em> as the event progressed;\u00a0\u2018no amount of organisation \/ preparation can leave you totally equipped for things.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0And Lucy and Amy both commented on \u2018the importance of communication – I think this is one of of the most vital components of running a successful event and working in a team.\u2019\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Lorna Duncanson, Seven Stories\u2019 Programming Co-ordinator, said: \u2018It was lovely to have such fun\u00a0and accessible musical workshops at Seven Stories!\u2019<\/em> And from Jane\u2019s perspective, \u2018<\/em>the Music<\/span>al Creepy Crawlies team put a huge amount of thought, imagination\u00a0and\u00a0hard work\u00a0into their workshop, which was clearly very much enjoyed by the children and well received by the parents.
